Hello All,

I have just purchased a 10D and am now outfitting with an assortment of lenses. I plan to do mostly nighttime sports photography like football and soccer. I currently have the 16-35 f2.8L which I thought would be a good overall lense to have. I have considered getting a 70-200 f2.8L IS and a 1.4x converter. This would allow me to have an effective 105-300 because of the CCD size conversion factor.
Two questions:
(1) Is the 300mm enough zoom for doing close-up action of soccer and football?
(2) Will the 1.4x change my f-stop setting significantly to negatively impact the stop action I would like to get in low light conditions such as these type activities?

70-200 f/2.8 is a good choice for starters as it gives you both a fast lens and with teleconverters can double as a much longer lens if needed.

Sort of a best of both worlds.

FYI 70-200mm X the 10D's 1.6 crop factpor gives you

112-320mm,.. still at f/2.8.... not bad!

The 1.4X teleconverter will get you a 156-448mm :)

The teleconverter will decrees your maximum aperture to an f/4... still not bad at all.

A 70-200mm f/2.8 will also work well with the 2X teleconverter in a pinch (if there is decent daylight) yeilding you an f/5.6 max aperture with a 140-400mm lens that translates to 224-640mm "equivelent" on the 10D!

A truly flexible lens indeed!
And keep in mind there are a number of 400mm lenses out there both prime and zoom that have max aps of f/5.6 :)
