Just a quick note: Apache 2 is not recommended server software with PHP and with Exhibit Engine.
In short, EE does not support Apache 2 and vice versa.
If you insist of using Apache 2, you _must_ use the latest PHP with it and read all in http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.apache2.php
Faulty server program installation will cause database corruption (corrupted form data messes things up), page load errors and other strange problems.

I used a complete install version found at:
http://www.apachefriends.org/wampp-en.html
It uses Apache 2 and the latest PHP version, 4.3.3. This works fine with other PHP programs as it should according to the site you mentioned Pekka:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/install.apache2.php
Is this what is causing my problems as mentioned in thread:

Why is it that a newer 'beter' version doesn't work with your software? All functions work with me and other PHP-Mysql-Apache software works fine. The only thing that I have is that my thumbnails arn't made properly and that the links don't work.
Can someone help me?

Apache 2 and PHP combination is considered by PHP authors to be still in beta stage. So until they confirm that it is stable and good for production websites, solving bugs that are caused by Apache 2 and PHP combination is simply futile from my part. If EE works in Apache 1.3, and there are some strange bugs in Apache 2, they are most likely caused by Apache 2/PHP bugs which will be fixed by either PHP or Apache and I cannot be sure that any of my quick solutions will hold on after next, changed, Apache Or PHP release. Hopefully this explanation will make my position as developer clearer.
Of course it all may work just fine, too. Many problems I see are configuration errors.
