View Full Version : D30 Flash Sync Malfunction

Hi,

My D30 suddenly failed to cooperate with my 420EX flashes. Actually, it doesn't work with any flash at all, even with its own built-in one. In the viewfinder display everything looks OK: flash indicator shows the flash is on, shutter speed and aperture are set accordingly, and when I press the shutter button, the flesh fires as it should?but the picture is completely underexposed. It looks as if the flash has fired while the shutter is (still) closed, as a result of mismatched flash synchronization. All exposures taken without flash are normal.

Can anyone provide some useful explanation?

Thanks!

Bin

Sound like you've somehow set your flash compensation to a negative setting. The setting remains even after you turn your camera off.

Display the problem image on the camera's LCD and press info to check the setting.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your attetion!

I have set the flash compensation to maximum.
But the problem still exists.
is it a hardware problem?

My D30 developed this problem too...along with really bad overexposure without flash.

Send your flash AND body to Canon and have them fix it.

I doubt if your problem is a setting you may have mis-adjusted on your camera.

I had the same thing happen to my D30, would not trigger external flash, on camera (pop-up) flash badly under-exposed, worked fine without flash.
Last week I sent it in for repair, estimate $380 US.
I'm still waiting for it to come back. I think I caused this problem using my Novotron strobes without a voltage controller. I've got one now, cost about $50 from B&H.

$380 US is too much for me. Actually, a second-hand D30 is only $500 US.

Anyways, thanks a million for your attention!

Your right about the cost of repair, too high, but it will have a 6 month canon warrenty, and I don't think I can get that off E-bay for $500. If I had my druthers, I'd buy another 10D for back-up, but that's not happening.
Oh well, I learned a lesson, and paid the price.
Good luck with your problem, perhaps it's not as extensive as mine was.

I noticed the same problem on my D30 with 420ex too. Without any exposure compensation, the pictures came out much darker than I thought they should. I ended up adjusting the flash compensation a little and that gave me the results that I was looking for.

Thanks a lot!
I have adjust the flash compensation to max, but it still cant work.

I just asked Canon's service center in Hong Kong. They told me that I have to pay 300 HK$ for checking and 1650 HK$ for repairing the problem, if i want. It seems cheaper.

Just a hunch here but you could try re-flashing the firmware with 1.0.3.0

May I ask how to replace the shutter?
Can I do it by myself?
Thanks a million for your help!
