View Full Version : Official GKPE IV Thread - August 5th 2006

Here we go, GKPE IV is happening, so this time after an almost unanimous vote we have:
GKPE IV - Volcano Time Part 2 The Lesser Mountains of Auckland
Saturday 5 August 2006
mountain n. (Abbr. Mt. or Mtn.) 1. A natural elevation of the earth's surface having considerable mass, generally steep sides, and a height greater than that of a hill. 2. A natural elevation of the earth's surface formed by the materials ejected from a volcano.
So here we go the GKPE Tour of the Auckland Volcanoes! The Auckland Isthmus has approximately 50 volcanoes, all extinct (phew, but isn't there a pattern developing here?). After "knocking the old bastard off" to quote Ed Hillary - Rangitoto, its time to check out the rest.
Well you can all breath a sigh of relief we are not doing all 50, as many are have been quarried away (hey see that hill over there, it is basically a rock plug on a magma flow, so lets dig it away  ) or are now just lakes and basins. Also there are reasonably spread out so to make it easier Auckland City Council has a competition that involves running up and down the main ones (yes they are all mad!), so I suggest we use their list, they are:
One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie)
Mt Eden (Maungawhau)
Auckland Domain (Pukekaroa)
Mount Hobson (Remuwera)
Mount St Johns (Titikopuke or Ohinerau)
Three Kings -Big King Reserve (Te Tatua-a-Riukiuta)
Mount Roskill (Puketapapa)
Mount Albert ( Owairaka)
Taylors Hill (Taurere)
Mount Wellington Domain (Maungarei)
That is a reasonably large list so we may have to prioritise or shorten the list.
Some more gaps to plug like working out points of interest etc and let us not forget:
Great Kiwi Old School Photo Shoot (GKOSPS)
I think this got missed last time as we were all throughly stuffed
In case you missed it here is what GKOSPS is:
We we pick one lens (no zooms!), turn of our autofocus, autoexposure and rapidfire, lock in a single ISO setting, turn off our LCD's (no peeking until we are done ) and limit our selves to what the people of times gone by would call a couple of rolls of film, we then go and get creative and become one with our cameras for an hour or so, what will happen, well we will have to wait and see.
We may have to review those rules as not every one has a viewfinder or prime lens. We also need to pick a good place to do the GKOSPS.
Travel wise we will pool what ever transport we have, if we get a GKPE I/III turn out it will be several vehicles, if we get a GKPE II turn out we will be pilling onto someones Vespa...
Enough rambling from me.
Right can I please have a show of hands if you are:
Wouldn’t miss it unless Auckland Camera were giving away Sigma 300-500s on that day
Probably will make it but need to confirm…
Probably won’t make it there are more important things in life than Photography…

If additional transport is needed I don't mind driving as long as someone navigates.

Hey, I wonder who was the one voting against! ;)
Anyway, I "probably will make it but need to confirm": there exists a faint hope that I'll move to Whitianga on August 2nd!
Tomorrow I'll ask Laura if she is in, as well. I'll have to use convincing arguments: after Rangitoto she commented "never again"! :p

We tried that on the first GKPE, VERY LONG DAY, but it was also in Sepetember, when the days are longer, and we got some REALLY GOOD shots, or at least I did :)

Perhaps we can do an early for some and a catch up a little later for those less enthusiastic about the sunrise. Not sure what we should do in the event or rain, GKPE was a bit wet, but it was also in the Waikato. We could actually pay to get a moon man weather report for the day?

Cool! Don't forget to visit the Summer Palace -- way heaps of photo ops in that place as well as other minor palaces within Bangkok.
Others that you shouldn't miss: Chatuchak, Patpong Night Markets. Remember to negotiate aggressively when you've found something that you really like -- when they see a Caucasian or tourists they see $$$ signs flashing. I normally start at 30% of their first offer then work my way up.
If you have time, Changmai (former capital) would be a great place to visit. An elephant safari would also be a fantastic experience.
Btw, it is monsoon season over there so some wet weather gear is in order if you want to stay dry. As is light clothes. Humidity is about 98% relative so it will be a heck of a system shock coming from our winter weather.
If you want to impress your Thai hosts, learning even the simplest greeting with the accompanying gesture says heaps. Sawasdi kap (pronounced: Sa-wa-di-kap (sa as in sap, wa as in water, di as in dee, kap, as in cap) this greeting is accompanied by a gesture of putting together your hands on your chest, palms together fingers extended (like you are praying), and a slight bow. Also, as a sign of respect, Thais will refer to colleagues with "Khun" at the beginning of their names, e.g., Khun Iain.
Have fun and do post some pics!!!

Brilliant, John! I do appreciate your suggestions.Given the level of humidity, I'll be leaving the walk around lens on... I haven't been great at posting shots, I confess. Must figure out how to nicely frame in PS as you do! Thanks too for the suggestions about the use of the language. We have been humbled by the generosity and friendliness of the hospitality on previous trips to Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore, and it seems only right to demonstrate a regard for their language and culture. Thanks again!

We need a plan, east to west, west to east, central and out clockwise? To make it easier, start at the best spot for a sunrise (I would suggest out west to get all the cones?), then head eastish? Makes a longer day for those out my way though.

An unmoveable somewhat unknown deadline sometime in early September related to someones new baby sister.
I really need to get big sisters new bedroom finished this weekend so it can air the paint smell out and there is some "settling time" for her to adjust to the new room. I may have been good to go if I had been able to get the rug for her room last weekend but they were out of stock and they are open Saturday only.
For now I may make an appearence later in the day.

You'll have to excuse me from your trip as well. I have three excuses so you can take your pick.
A/ I'll be sunning myself in Noosa with the missus.
B/ I live twice as far south as NordieBoy and if he ain't going...
C/ Other.

You make me sick with your lack of commitment!
A/ I could go to Noosa instead. I don't mind if I go with your missus or mine.
B/ It is nowhere near as far to Auckland as it is to Noosa, and you don't have any problem going there do you?.....well do you!?
C/ Other.

An unmoveable somewhat unknown deadline sometime in early September
As someone with an unmoveable somewhat unknown deadline sometime early in October - I can see how that may upset the schedule... ;)
On the leaving-cars-somewhere-safe-nearby-Mt-Eden front, we have a relatively safe driveway. I've never had a car broken into when parked in this driveway (which is more than I can say for the road out the front :D )

Hi All
Sounds like you are all going to have a great time :D I would love to join you, but my excuse is it's way further for me, and I am popping off to Sydney on Tuesday, to take many pictures of cars going round and round, and I would hate to tire out my shutter finger :P Mind you, I will also be going to the taronga zoo, so I will see what I can get there first!

Nope! :(
As I wrote some days ago, this weekend I'm going to leave the house in Stanmore Bay, so no GKPE4. Sigh! BTW, it seems that I'm going to spend some weeks in Warkworth, before moving to the North Shore.

No-one's said anything so presume totally empty car at this point, thought I'd turn up at about 6:15 & see if anyone wanted to park up at our place for the duration & tag along. Only slight fly in the ointment is I've also been invited to a neighbours for a birthday bash so wouldn't mind getting home around 6ish. Given the weather is expected to pack up around late afternoon that may not be a problem. If you like you can bowl up here & I'll do the taxi thing.
