Well my girlfriend and I are in edinburgh for a bit of a vacation and need a tripod for some nightime photography.. I,ve looked in the yellow pages for some photography shops and not knowing the area definately doesn't help.. The front desk wont be helpful because they hardly knew where some of the local restaurants were.. We're staying on princess street near Waverly station and need some place thats close enough to walk too to buy a tripod and head.

Anyone with any help would be nice..

I'm not in Scotland, but a google search reveals what looks to be a nice shop in Edinburgh at 219 Bruntsfield Place - coincidentally, it's called Edinburgh Camera!

I can't recall where Bruntsfield Place might be, but for some reason, I think it might be in the Leith area. But your hotel should be able to tell you that much.

Wish I were there.

Do a search on Yell.com for "camera" in "Edinburgh"

That will give you a list of shops (look for retailers, specifically).

At the bottom of the results, there's a box ("Find "camera" closest to postcode/rail or tube station: ") where you can type in the post code of your hotel. If you search again, it'll tell you how far each shop is away from the hotel.

I have a solid tripod I could lend you tonight - where are you?

Its a generic manfrotto clone with ballhead - is that OK?

(I'm going to Canada on Friday, so it would only be tonight)

as for camera shops, theres 3 in my area, and a jessops at the west end of princes street.
edit: I read your post more..

go onto princes street. Coming from the castle side (not the side with shops), turn left. Follow the road along until you have a large, red sandstone building on your left (a hotel) with flags on it. follow the continuation of the road until it narrows off. (and gets more seedy). Keep going forward until you see a jessops on your left.

alternativel, go here: http://www.jessops.com/Services/Storefinder/default.aspx and type waverly into the station/airport box. The one you want is number 1.

Bruntsfield place is not in leith - it is however, right next to my house :)

As I said before, theres 3 camera shops very close to me. Cameratiks specialises in old cameras - you should take a look. They have hundreds of old lenses in their window! Edinburgh cameras is more upmarket, and then theres another small one slightly further towards town. They will all sell tripods.

edit: Some maps

(btw, edinburgh camera and cameratiks are about a 20-30 minute walk from princess street, or the number 11, 15, 16,17 and 23 busses go right by them both - check with the driver you're going the right direction though :D)

Hi I work in Edinburgh and there are few places you could go.

If you walk along Princes Street to the Scott Monument there is a road leading to St. Andrews Square, Jenners is on corner, on that road is a small camera shop.

If you go to the far end of Princes Street past Lothian Rd. onto Shandwick Place there are a couple of places - Jessops and Black and Lizars.

Alternatively why not order over the net and get it delivered to hotel?

Hope this helps.
