I would like to add some type of lighting to my collection but have no idea of what to get........too many to choose from. I plan on taking pictures indoors and outdoors of babies/kids. So I am primarily looking into indoor lighting that is VERY portable. I don't have a studio nor do I plan on investing in one. I just need something that is VERY affordable and portable. Any advise........thanks!!!

While the Alien Bees are great lighting units, for what you have told us you want to shoot they may be a bit of overkill.
The question you need to ask yourself, do you want to setup light stands, umbrellas, et all each time. If you are after some decent quality lighting for taking shots of your kids I would start with the 580EX. If you find you want to add a second light you can always get another one or a 430 and operate them as master/slave or get the ST-E2 wireless controller.

I agree with ssim. Alien Bees, seem a bit much for what you're describing. The Speedflash solution would work quite well and would be much more portable.
