Hi all.... I am getting started on organizing a Meet Up in the Baltimore DC area. I have been in touch with a few of you so I know interest is there.
I am trying to shoot for late september. Thinking about making it a park outing where we can bring our spouse and kid(s)
I dont have an exact date set yet but please let me know if you are interested so I can make a list with names and contact everyone individually!
Thanks guys!!

If your doing late September, I'm in.
Labor day weekend, a friend of mine is getting married, and October 14th, I'm shooting my second wedding (yay!). So anytime in between those would be great! :D

I'm in. The 9th I have a board meeting in the morning, so late afternoon would be best. The 15-16, I'll be in Vegas. All other days would work out great, but I would prefer a Saturday.
Thanks for setting this up.

I want to tentatively set September 24th for now, that is a sunday, but will update everyone if thats the final date.
Sunday just because many of us shoot weddings and september is a good month for that. Most weddings are friday or saturday, so sunday offers the best chances to be off.

September 24 is good with me! Hope it works out for everyone. This would be my first POTN meet... kinda excited about it! :D

Just a note after reading the OP - for some of us, having the family along stifles the photography, as they may not be as into it as we are. That doesn't make it a no-go, but it certainly might make for a different kind of Meet Up. . .

Sept 24 works for me as well. I second CoolToolGuy's suggestion and would prefer to keep it to just photographers if we plan to shoot.

Perhaps we could shoot on September 24th, and then plan a separate "POTN Family Picnic"? That could be fun! :D

I am checking my calendar. I think I can come, especially to shoot. I'm with Tony. Let's find a place to eat and shoot. :)

Like I said in another thread. I would be interested but it depends where it is. I am in Southern York County, Pa - which is a 2 hour drive to DC. So the Baltimore area would be better for me.
As far as the family thing, I agree that it could be a problem photography wise. I don't have kids and my wife wouldn't mind. But I can imagine that young kids would change a lot of things.

Sept. 24's problematic for me - we have a 2+ week trip starting in just a couple of days from then. I wouldn't want to commit. Earlier in the month would work better.

For those that prefer no kids for this meet up, what would you like to do? What kind of setting would you like to meet at? What would you like to shoot.,.. scenery, people, buildings.... just trying to get an idea what people have in mind.
I had thought to just get a chance to personally meet everyone and take pics of the get together itself and maybe some of the park, but maybe you all have some totally different ideas?

I see. I guess I didn't read between the lines. In this type of situation, certainly whole families should come. I have never been to a "meet" before. But I was envisioning a bunch of photographers meeting someplace, walking around, taking pictures, discussing different shots and techniques, and sharing photos. You know, like going to some attraction or monument or other photogenic place. But I didn't realize you were intending this to be just a gathering for a picnic type of deal.
In all honesty, I would probably not be too interested in doing that. I don't know, I guess I am just not that outgoing enough. But a situation like I described I think I would be more comfortable.
But don't let me stop you. I am sure that many of you would like this type of meet.

I agree. Maybe a day of shooting followed by a small cookout or dinner out at the end of the day. I think we'd all have more to talk about and discuss with one another after a day of shooting. I think that would be better than just meeting up with a bunch of new people and having to find things to talk about. Just my $.02

I agree. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing shooting techniques. My concern about having a family there is that some would be more interested in spending time with the family and not mingling with the group. I'm probably a bit biased though since I am going single.

Federal hill is always neat - you get the city and the park setting, plus plenty of places to eat. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/patapscovalley.html is also very nice - lots of areas to go to.
Wrench

Both of those places would make a wonderful day trip. Great cityscape and monument shots from federal hill and it's close to the inner harbor and Ft.McHenry too. Patapsco State Park is real nice for landscapes and limited wildlife. Fells point has some nice places to shoot, too. Then there's always DC with Georgetown, The Mall, Monuments and National Zoo. I guess we need to figure out what we want to shoot and go from there. I know I lack the know-how for shooting landscapes and urban type shots so I'd like to meet up with some people to show me the ropes.

It's around $17 per person. http://www.rennfest.com/. Group tickets for 20 or more (in advance or at the gate) for $13 each. Less for seniors and under 16 (under 7 free). I can get tickets at work for $14.50 if we'd be lookingat fewer than 20.

Although I live in Pa, I used to live in MD for almost 30..Lived about 15mins from Crownsville..
I am not sure if this is a event I will be able to attend, but I will let you know as we draw a little closer.
Crownsville is pretty easy to get to, for people that havent been down that way..Its just about 5mins outside of Annapolis..It is right off of Rt. 97 towards Annapolis, there is an exit for Crownsville..
There are also alot of nice places to shoot within a 10 mile area..You got downtown Annapolis for the history, the Naval Academy, the bay is close, also the severn river..

If there's a MRF interest, my current schedule looks like Sept. 16-17 are the Virginia Scottish Games in Alexandria (Fort Ward Park; note the new date and place for those of you who follow this). The following weekend's my last possible until Oct. 21-22, the closign weekend (which usually has a competitive jousting series with a number of teams rather than the usual show jousts). Bear in mind that I'm a Rennie. I'm going to be there at least a couple of days. Must-sees include Shakespeare's Skum and "O", A Fool.

Would you all prefer early in the morning or afternoon? Too late is probably not good as it will get too dark
Jon
27th of July 2006 (Thu), 08:15
Not too dark - I've gotten some very nice, atmospheric shots after the Pub Sing on the final day - shops lit up with a warm glow and the streets practically empty. Maybe not dark enough. Personally, I tend to open 'em up and stay until at least the Pub Sing around 6. You can get some nice candids there, both before and during.
23rd and 24th is Pirate Weekend.

I can in September on a Sat. Nice shots, Jon. I was just thinking that the fall colors would be nice that time of year.
Jon

Not too bad for not using the viewfinder . . . didn't want to distract anyone. ISO 1000 on the D60, so noisy as all get out. September's a bit early for the fall colours though. Those were Scottish Weekend 2003, which was Sept. 14-15 that year. Just hope it doesn't decide to rain or roast.
