I've tried a lot of versions of this, do you find this one effective?

Very nicely done; I think it keeps your attention on the little boy and the awe in his face over the wonderful pumpkin he is holding. That's one strong kid :D cause thats one good sized pumpkin. Yes I think treating the background in grey scale really works, the only negative I can find is the white 'hot spot' on the pumpkin and his face, other then that NICE JOB :)

I'm with sandy. Probably a -1 exp compensation and fill flash would "toned down" the blown highlights without loosing the shadows. But besides that a very effective picture !!

Thanks guys. Yes, I knew the hot spots were there, I guess I was hoping the grayscale background distracted attention from them. Here's a version with the hot spots painted in. Just for grins, how do you think this version compares? It may not look quite like my nephew any more. Sandy, he's only 2 1/2 by the way and he really does love his pumpkins!
Thanks,
Sheri

Sheri:
I like more the first one. The last one is too "processed".
If you want to do something, just change the white highligths for "colorized" ones following the original color (flesh or pumpkin).Something like this:

It is a wonderful shot. I love it.
I normally am not a fan of desaturated colour, but given the nature and in-DOF of that image info. I'll buy into it here.

Not to busy at all, a beautiful montage that tells a wonderful story. Well done. You can sense the excitment in the little boy as he gets ready for halloween :)

They are all beautiful shots.
What a happy looking kid.
Know what? I bought my Halloween "treats" but forgot to get the pumkin.
Have a great evening with young fellow.

PS: You know, 20 years ago we'd be driving to or from windsurfing at Hatteras around Halloween. I remember one storm -- it turned out to tbe the US side of the "Perfect Storm" -- delayed our depature from Avon , NC. On Halloween we got the OK to travel north on salt-watered, sand infested roads. We stopped for a bite to eat at Rhodanthe where we met all sorts of kids in great costumes. Made us even more homesick!

Thanks for the all the comments. I had the same reaction when I saw him lugging that pumpkin from place to place. Glad he wasn't distracted by the camera.
Howie, sounds like a good time, windsurfing in Hatteras, but isn't it cold there this time of year? I'm a Virginia native myself.
Tyler's my nephew. Unfortunately I won't be seeing him on Halloween but I'll get lots of goblins at the door. I've postponed getting the treats so they don't get consumed ahead of time, but I do have a nice pumpkin. Maybe I should draw a face on, I'm not very good at carving one lol.
