What is the most efficient, fast way to upload a batch of 4000 photos, just one size (normal) ?

I think the upload function will not work with these quantities.

...any good FTP program should do the trick.

Total Commander is great, a little swiss knife for computers. www.ghisler.com

Yes, I know.
But once uploaded using smartFTP, I normally use UPLOAD TO DATABASE and because of time-out problems this doesn't work on large quantities.
so,
STEP 1: upload all pictures to
thumbs
microthumbs
and normal
using smartFTP
STEP 2: how do I proceed ?

just use winxp's image resizer power tool, or another program to auto create your thumbs and micro thumbs, and then just upload all the pictures, large, thumbs, and microthumbs to your site... and then do a manual add to database... thats what I used to do before i figured out my ftp issues.

and there are no time-out problems using this method?

no timeout issues for me. and you won't get any, because if you already upload the photos, it sohuld just automatically add them when you do the manual add.. it just creates the links... very fast.

Chriz,

Step 2, set up the correct path for your gallery, then go to the Manually insert photo section, and there should be Add all photos to the gallery, then you should see Make all photos visible by public.

It's easier then you thought. Let me know if you have questions along the way.

I know that this can be done by resizing the images beforehand manually, but (and I think this is what Chriz was trying to say) what about doing it automatically with the Upload page?

No no, that was not what I was trying to say.
The upload page does automatically resize images and sends them to microthumb, thumb and size paths. The problem there is when you try to do that with too many pictures in one batch then you get timeout problems.

But I got it sorted out with the answers in this thread, thanks for your feedback.
