Anyone heard any rumors about it?

I saw a photoshopped image of a 100/2.8 L IS (that didn't say "IS") on DPReview the other day. It was easily picked apart.

Haven't heard of any real 100/2.8 replacement, though. The present version is an excellent lens already, though IS could be useful.

The 100 Macro is soo sharp. Between the f/2.8 and the ability to adjust your ISO, I would like Canon to leave it alone. I think IS would have been nice at the butterfly pavillion where you can't take a tripod and yet my 580ex came through where IS would have been used. If the sharpness issue that comes up with the 70-200 IS comes into play here, it would kill the the lens. Read any review on macros and the Canon usually has the edge over Nikon. I think the Nikon macro with VR is trying to close the gap and I feel that it's a gimick. The Canon 180mm macro might do well with IS since it's longer and heavier. Cool thought, though.

Try one of the macro lites on the 100 and you'll fast find IS is not necessary.

Can you tell me where this butterfly pavillion you are referring to is? Thanks

I suspect that IS does not work effectively at such a short distance anyway. If it does, that would be a bonus as you can gain a couple of extra stops. I've been using the Nikon 105 micro VR on the D200, and found that the VR is not effective when it gets to 1:1 (about 6" from the subject). I often turn the VR off when I use it for macro works and have it on for portraits.

There are butterfly exhibits in many larger cities, usually in conjunction with botanical gardens.

And I would imagine Canon will probably do something with IS and one of their macro lenses, although more likely the 180mm.

Why isnt the Current 100mm f/2.8 Macro lense not an L?

I've often asked myself that very same question.

Haven't heard about it. It would make sense, seeing as that is an older design and NIkon just came out with a macro lens with a VR.

If they did that it they would have to give it weather sealing and charge you $500 more then it prices now. Be glad it's so good for so cheap and be quiet :)

Look at the price for the 180mm L!!!
