IMO the G3 is not very well suited for action photos, just like (almost) all compact digicams. You will have problems with shutter lag: there is some time between pressing the shutter button and the camera recording the image, which can be just enough to miss the moment you were aiming for... Also, auto focus on the G3 is sometimes very slow, much too slow to keep track of moving objects or people.

I've made photos of marathon runners with my G3 and despite the above problems I got some nice photos, but it's difficult to capture exactly the moment you're aiming for.

Jesper is right - the G3 and other small digicams are just not designed for quick sports shooting. But if you know this ahead of time, and shoot, shoot, shoot many photos, a few are bound to come out OK.

Practice the "half-press" shutter technique. This will increase your odds of taking a good picture.

Set up your custom modes (c1 and c2), depending on how far from the action you think you will be, and manually set the white balance and ISO:

This will noticeably reduce your shutter lag time, since the camera will not have to try and autofocus, nor guess where to set the white balance and ISO. The less the camera has to think about, the faster it will begin to trip the shutter.

I went to take some pictures of a football game last week. Pictures turned out great! I set my ISO speed high, manualy set WB, set shutter to 1/1250s and shot on High Continuous. The only thing that sucked is zoom and the lady next to me with her 10D, but you probably don't have to worry bout that.

I have found that to get around the shutter lag problem I set all settings manually (as stated in a previous post), including manually focusing on a specific area, and then wait for the subject to fill the area and then shot. I have found the G3 operates fairly quickly with these settings, although it is not suited to some sports where the action is constantly in different places.
