View Full Version : POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO DAY PART 20- BLACK AND WHITE

saravrose
21st of July 2006 (Fri), 13:15
Happy friday.. the theme this week is black and white.. I have an appreciation of black and white photos for a lot of different reasons.. The compositions of a black and white photo without the splashes of color as a focal point is often different.. the simplicity of a black and white image has often struck me as very beautiful... the feelings that can be conveyed with the abscense of distracting color is often really wonderful. So your challenge this weekend is to shoot with the idea that the color from your image is not going to be an element..

I know that I often look for splashes of color to strengthen a composition.. drawing the eye to certain elements and cropping out areas with unwanted colors and tones... So, perhaps this isn't a direct theme but rather a direction of where to take your composition skills.. The challenge comes with a new way of looking for compositions.. opening eyes to the lines, shadows, whether or not something will translate and ofcourse, being willing to sacrifice the colors that we all love in our photographs...

The rules are all the same photos can be taken from sun-up saturday until sundown sunday and posted by monday.. Whether you prefer to use the black and white setting in your camera, use a channel mixer, simple action, or channel mixer the way you convert your images is up to you and we are as interested in the way you accomplished your results as the results themselves.. Feel free to post the before and after if you want to but, it's not a requirement.. Have fun, happy shooting and i'm excited to see the results..

Golly, am I really the first to post? And I have no idea what I'm doing with B&W, but I do like the results in this case:

Original converted and resized for posting:

Aiden Robert - Born 7/21/06; 9:52pm CDST; 6 lbs 5 oz; 20 inches. And yes he is now the cutest grandchild in the entire world:D

http://performancephoto.us/images/Thumbs/060722%20B&W%20No%20PP.jpg

For the B&W, we use Paint Shop Pro. I changed to BG to black, cropped and then changed the image to Grey Scale. I played with the black and white points???? but didn't like the results so did the ole undo trick. Here is the result:

http://performancephoto.us/images/Thumbs/060722%20B&W1.jpg

I'll try to get out tomorrow and shoot something else and play some more. Maybe by then I'll get some tips to try from all of you that have more experience and "see" in B&W.

COngratulations on your grandma status! I may make it next year. My oldest and his wife are trying hard. ;)
Beautiful babe and lovely photo. I do prefer the B/W - it reduces a photo to just the essentials.
as for processing I understand we get better as we go along. ;) I'm seldom pleased with my efforts yet, though.
Never tried using Paint shop so I can't offer any tips.

Awhhh, thank you Wu and Cat. I did the same background thing to the colored version, didn't crop so I had plenty of space at the top to layer on the vital statistics, then used the flattened image to send the announcement out via e-mail to the rest of the family. I couldn't resist telling my mom and she went with us to the hospital visit. Curtis N took a nice 4 generation picture.

Hmmmm, now there is a challenge: a: It is Curtis N's picture and b: it doesn't meet the theme for this week. So permission needs to be granted all the way around.;)

Cute Bub, Becky. Congratulations :)

I haven't participated in one of these threads for a while ... been too busy with work, etc. I never seem to have any time on weekends. I like Meaty's suggestion of using the whole week if possible. Maybe we can come up with two topics one week to get a week ahead, and then just stay a week ahead? (as in discuss the topic for two weeks ahead all the time?)

Anyway, here's a quick one .. well, two, from me. Apologies if it's a little large. I possibly didn't stick to the theme as it was intended from Sari's comments above (neither of the shots are actually B&W), kinda wanted to do something a little different.

5D + 135L.

hi everybody like the shots so far.. Unfortunately my computer's hardrive is being transferred to an external harddrive and then it needs to be 'defragged' whatever the heck that means... so, I might be a little late with shots.. can't download or PP anything without it.. but, i'll post as soon as it's returned to me..

I'm surprised by how quiet this thread is.

Becky N -- Congratulations. You must be ecstatic! And just think of all the joy that is yet to come!

Mat -- I agree, that's spooky. But also interesting. I especially like the green nose. How did you do that?

Carzee -- Like the no-nonsense expression, the engine and the composition.

I almost didn't particpate this weekend since I'm not a big fan of B&W. When I woke up this morning I was greeted by a wonderful change in the weather, from hot & muggy to cool & clear. So I grabbed the camera, and off I went. I didn't shoot with the B&W theme in mind, but when I looked at this one I thought it might do. So here's my attempt:

The B&W version

Becky, he's adorable! I'm not used to being around babies, but I was there when my cousin had her son. Gosh, he was TINY! I hardly dared to hold him, he looked so fragile.

Mat, that's one freaky looking cat! ;)

Carzee, see, you find B&W wherever you go. :)

Ok, here are my two ... first shows the colour and then B&W versions. Both different and I like both :-)

Third shot is just an arty farty composition that would normally do well as B&W but the light washed out the contrast so ... I will go back another time when light is better.

Matt... Love the conversion on that one, very ethereal. ;) Beautiful cat btw!

Carzee... normally, a busy background wouldn't work well for a BW, takes away from the subject. But this works, and works well! I love the wall behind him. Great shot, and beautiful tones.

Sari... we'll wait for ya, no matter how long it takes. Hope you're up and runnin soon. (how's your toe?)

Barbara...I like that shot, nice in BW and color!

Condyk... Those turned out great! I like arty farty ;) that first shot in BW is fabulous. I really like the texture and tones in both your shots.

For me, I decided to re-do a composition idea that I tried quickly the other night while playing TPBM. I played around a bit with lighting, filters, exposure, etc.
After messing around with different options for a while, I came up with a few that I thought turned out ok. Im not very good at BW conversions yet, but I am learning.
First two shots: a before and after.

Did a mess of yard work today, took a nice hot soaking bath afterward, now I'm lounging on the front porch with a beer, of course, and there is no way I'm going to get up, go out, and take the second shot I was thinking about for this week's theme.:p

But, I'll certainly comment on what has been posted:

Carzee - This is an extremely cool shot, reminds me of an old Marland Brando movie, though I can't think of the name of it right now. I'll ask Curtis N and get back to you if he remembers. (He doesn't know) Thought it might be Easy Rider, but wasn't that with Peter Fonda?

Barbara - Nice shot, I like it both in color and B&W each draws the eye around the scene but in different nuiances.

Condyke - This theme suits you well and your produced some outstanding work. The arty farty is hang-it-on-the-wall material, for sure.

Claire - You crack me up regarding fear of how fragile a new born is. One of our Sisters-in-law was the same way, now 4 kids later, she has gotten over it. Had the most kids of any of us.

Cat - I would not have thought to do this subject in B&W, I really like the results. My favorite being the composition in #3, but; is the plastic wrap still on the bread in the last two? If not what is causing the sheen on the cut end and what is obscuring part of the wine bottle lable?:???: :???:

No wrapping on the bread at all, it is a rustic bread, with some different colors, maybe thats what you see as a 'sheen' ?
I'm not sure what part of the bottle label you mean..the only thing obscuring it that I can see is the bread, but I might be looking at a totally different spot than you are.

It wasn't taken this weekend, obviously, and not truly B/W, but sure, I'll stick up a small one. There are 4 still available on flickr. afraid no pp done to any of these so they look best as avatar sized. Stuck the series up for my son and his fiance to see and select before I spent time on unwanted ones. One of the ones they liked best is set to be used for their engagement announcement.

It is my fave of the ones I'm allowed to show. The good ones they kept for themselves and I've strict prohibitions on letting others view them - they are really good, to say so myself. some of my favorite shots. Once the new wears off of them I'll be allowed to print a set for myself. ;)

Nope that is it, I'm looking at in better light this morning and can see it is all bread. Last night I was out on the porch and it almost looked transluscent. The bread looks mighty tasty I might add. Wine and bread a wonderful combination as is wine and cheese. :)

Some really wonder images this week. Very serious, art oriented photos.

Becky: Wonderful baby conversion and a beautiful baby. Congratulations, on your new g-ma status. Spoil them and send 'em home!

Fitz: That is very interesting, sort of in a Halloween motif. So it seems that you turned a white cat black, or iridescent, or something like negative...very cool however.

Carzee: Somehow, I imagined that was you on the moto.....wonderful conversion.

Barbara: I always like photos of people taking photos...very cute and another wonderful conversion.

Dave: I like you perspective peeling paint shot, but the last one is really great. I love the weather wood and the worn look to the type. Great textures in both shots.

Cat: Last time I saw that bottle (TPBM) it was more than 1/2 full...at least you added some bread. Hope you are feeling OK.

blackviolet: She is beautiful. Very photogenic. The camera loves her. Beautiful B/W conversions.

wu: I have seen the shadow image before and still like it! ;)

MeatyO: Really good B/W. Gotta love those old trains. Looks like the train I took from Cairns to Kuranda.

Ok...here is my bit. I converted the Big Chicken to B/W in ACR. Very little processing after that. Added a layer mask and shined it up a bit.

Big Chicken lived on the Santa Monica pier in California. Here is some history http://www.santamonicapier.org/
The pier had an amusement park that opened in 1909 and some of it is still standing today. I recently went to a movable art gallery called Ashes and Snow. If you are given the opportunity, I recommend it, highly!

LOL
When I get my 30D I can take a pic of the guts. linked a generic guts photo somewhere that shows pretty much what it looks like. I'll be playing with my macro stuff in a day or two or 3 I imagine, and I'll convert some to B/W just to see.

Getting frustrated with B&H - 8 hours of "processing" status on my order, no record of it on the auto tracker phone number (of course), so the voice system "transfered" my call to the first available representative. Now it appears that there is no one there in customer service-- had it on speakerphone and ringing for 15 minutes. guess it is time to hang up. I have a feeling my overnight shipping fee was an enormous waste.

Fitz: That is very interesting, sort of in a Halloween motif. So it seems that you turned a white cat black, or iridescent, or something like negative...very cool however.
Yup, it's just a straight inverse of the colour one below it ... no other processing - so his white fur went sort of black, and his pink nose and ears went a kinda cool blue/green.

Incidentally, his nose and ears are a bit darker than the rest of him because he gets sunscreen put on them before he goes outside ... hehe. Then he invariably rolls around in the dirt ... so they end up like that :)

Pure white cats can very easily get skin cancer on their nose and ears. Have to be a bit careful.

Becky- Congratulations on the new addition to the family. I hope all is going well. That is an adorable photo, eyes open and everything. Great job on the conversion.

Matt- Very interesting conversion. From innocent to creepy.

Carzee- I love the location for that shot. The star bursts on the wall almost appear to be lights.

Barbara- The location of the shot is perfect for a B&W. The Marilyn Monroe image, the old dresses, old Coke bench, just perfect. Now replace that girls digital camera with a film camera and you are set.:D

Dave- Your urban shots work perfectly for this theme. I agree about your "arty farty" shot being washed out a bit. Shame as it looks like it would have been very cool.

Cat- I like your third image the best, because I can see all the bread and I am hungry right now.:D Although the tone on the last one is great too.

Blackviolet- The second image is fantastic. I just love her expression and her outfit is adorable.

wu- Very unusual shot. I love the shadow/silhouette type images. Maybe one day I will be creative enough to try some myself.

Paul- Great train shots. Makes me want to be a train robber in the old west.

Joayne- The big chicken works great in B&W. Good eye on that one.

For my shots I had to find something to shoot around the house because my wife and I had plans one evening, our friends had their baby (which we haven't got shots of yet), and lots to do around the house. Our daughter Haley stayed at a babysitters house on Saturday and returned Sunday in a cute little dress and hat. I knew that these shots could work if I found the right one. Here is the one I liked best (without the hat) laying on our bed:

96895

One of our dogs loves to go under Haley's crib and hide. He usually has these big heavy puppy dog eyes and for this shot was no exception:

96896

For both conversions I used the channel mixer in CS2. For the second shot this helped with his bandanna which was a spotty black thing before adjusting the channels. Then a lite sharpening and framing script.

Okay, I have an idea.. .. What about Transition as a theme... could be as simple as taking the same shot during different times of day, doorways and windows for composition ideas would work.. or two subjects at different ages.. anything to show the progression or change of time, place, life etc....

You mean I have to RETIRE before I can spend all my time on POTN?? Why did no one tell me this??
Boy am I in trouble.

Nah-- I think we do pretty well as is.:D However, it would help me to be wealthy and without obligations that interupt my time doing stuff I enjoy. Work just gets in the way somedays.

Okay, I have an idea.. .. What about Transition as a theme... could be as simple as taking the same shot during different times of day, doorways and windows for composition ideas would work.. or two subjects at different ages.. anything to show the progression or change of time, place, life etc....

sari

This is only my opinion (and I have been known to be opinionated :D), so please take it as such, but I think I'd rather see something simple and open this time ... there seem to have been a lot of before/after, processed/not processed, detail/no detail, "two different ways of looking at the same thing" type themes lately?

I think the theme I've enjoyed the most (whether I've participated or not) was "Red" ... which is probably the simplest theme we've had.

People may feel that they want something more challenging, but if the theme is very open like that, you can make it as easy or hard for yourself as you want to. For example with "Red", you could try for a photo of a particular red thing (like a bird, whatever), or you could go for something that (to you) fits the theme but has nothing to do with the colour red itself - something that feels like a "Red" emotion, etc ... that kind of thing.

The more open the theme, the wider range of interpretations I think we're likely to see (again, just my opinion). I know that kind of theme would be more likely to get me off my butt to take some photos (which is why I really like these threads) :)

Just a thought.

Cheers!
Mat.

Easy one coming up, how about wood?

condyk

I don't really care what we choose. I always shoot something and most shots I take I don't take for this and so don't post here. I just use the theme to get out. I liked the red theme too but mainly because I liked the shot I took that week. It just happened to be red! If simpler works for people, like anything starting with a letter ? then I am happy. It is about more people shooting more regularly. I also like Sari's idea.

I like it. Lucky I'm not 20 years younger or I'd probably make a rude joke about now, but I like it.

A letter of the alphabet would also be fun.

If we choose this one I suggest the letter: æ ;)

Or å,ä or even ö. Then we also got ø,ü, ß if we wanna be extra fancy. ;)

What about a simple theme like, "ABSTRACT" ?

Alternatively, we could just work our way through the seven colours of the rainbow? (Wow...then I could plan well in advance.)

More fun to work our way through Seven deadly sins-- and as I have said, they can be done without access to G&N

Just can't trust those ü s. they are like clowns--with that big constant smile hiding their true feelings beneath. And Prozac just makes it worse. their feelings are hidden even from them.

Pride
Envy
Gluttony
Lust
Anger
Greed
Sloth.

Hmm. Could be more difficult than they seem.

They'd definitely be a challenge. I'd love to try though, but maybe we should have something easy the next couple of weeks as some people have expressed that they've found the past themes tough? We can always save the 7 sins idea for later. Fine by me.

I might even have time this weekend to take some photos :)
... though I guess there are still 2 more days this week to get loaded up with work that needs to be done before Monday :(

I'm still hoping to get to Brisbane on Saturday night to see the Wallabies wallop the All Blacks :D (hoping for a kiwi to read this thread ...)

Taking the 400mm f/5.6 + 5D? Or perhaps a hired 300mm f/2.8 + 5D? "All" Blacks begins with the letter "A" you know :-D

I don't know about some obscure letter.. why don't we keep it simple and do a normal Letter.. so the first person to come up with a letter is the deciding vote...

Lay a target on the floor, throw up a set of scrabble letters, and the closest to the bullseye is it.:D If you don't have a scrabble game, take 26 cards from a deck and designate each one to a letter.

Question about the new letter theme:

Does the 'P' have to be the letter that starts the noun of the item we are shooting or can it be the adjective? i.e. pig (noun), purple people eater (adjective).
