Hey friends,

This is my first time shooting a band. They are just a local band and I did my best to make them look cool. They wanted to look a bid like mobsters.I did my best. I would love to know what you think. I shot all these with a 30d and a canon 16-35 2.8L

Very interesting shots. The first one is great, good location.

All but the second seem to have a "vibe" that is very popular these days for band images. I think you did a grand job in this sense. They look a bit young to come across as mobsters! :-)

I still like #4 and 3 best. Maybe on #3 the top of the (left) guys could be a bit lighter? And in #4 the faces??
Also I still think the expressions on the last are a bit akward. And I think it borders me a bit that the bottles are *just* off centre. In fact the whole image would have benefitted from an *exactly* symmetrical approach IMO.
Hindsight is always 20/20 vision :D
Overall some very, very nice images, maybe a few minor adjustments?
Oh, And I'm still curious to an 'unprocessed' image. ;)

yes yes they were rather young. :) The youngest looking is actually 22 and has is helicopter license. I was shocked as well.

no such thing in the case. these are all HDR. other than exposure blending and tone mapping... photoshop was minimal.

I know they are HDR, that's why I'm curious how just the 'medium' exposure would look...
It all comes down to a slight difference in taste I guess...
Nice images. Any comments from the band yet?

Hi Rian

I love these shots, I have two promo shoots coming up soon with local bands, any tips? I like the location, where did you use? Did you just use whatever lights/daylight that was available or did you take along some extra lights/reflectors?

Hey Rachel! I am new at this as well. :) I used ambient light for this shoot because I am not good with the flash yet. :) These were all shot in Augusta GA.

Well, I hadn't imagined *that* much extra info could be put into an image, yet still look even remotely natural.
I'll have to look into it. (Only used HDR once, from a single RAW file, and wasn't overly impressed)
edit: Nice sig: "An actual legal copy of photoshop CS2"

Hey buddy. I would suggest using image bracketing with a 2 stop separation so you get 3 good raw files. :)

I think thes are wonderful HDRs, particularly this one with the bridge. How about a little tutorial Rian?

Turn on your image editing where you give someone a chance to post a vesion that would like differnt. I'll be happy to post my "take" on the first image.

I've got a couple versions that I think look pretty moody.

You need to go to your user profile and turn turn it on. If not the mods will delete my post.

OK, I played around with the Shadow Highlight tool, chanel mixer, contrast...just another look of hundreds you could do...just seemed to create a little more mood and bring out the faces a bit better.

This one is over cooked a bit on purpose.

Do you have Photoshop CS or CS2?

You will need that to do it.

Go to Image>Adjustments>Shadow Highlight

Bring up the slider under Shadow up to what you like and then do the same thing in highlights. You can play with the other sliders to see what you get. Then go to Brightness and Contrast tab and add some contrast back in. Then go to chanel mixer and play with the sliders a touch. To get it to black and white check the bottom of the chanel mixer box that says monochrome and play with the sliders...I think I upped the blue and the red ...more blue than red.

You can then sharpen or add blur as your final step.

nthese are all HDR.
Shot #4 is HDR? How did you do that?

Impressive shots and great use of HDR for a band shot although I don't see the mob theme coming through on the first few. With baby faces like that I dunno how you'd get a good mob theme going, but impressive shots and HDR skills nonetheless.
