I am looking onto buying a teleconverter to add to my collection of EOS stuff!! I have a D30 and a Rebel TI. Does it degrade the picture quality? Does it work well with zoom lenses or are they mostly for fixed focal length lenses? Are there any companies what you would stay away from? Should I go with a 1.4X, 2.0X or 3.0X??

Thanks

first, what lens in specific do you plan to use it with? TCs don't work on all lenses due to different lenses having different optical construction. This is an issue with every brand.

Second, the Canon and Sigma TCs are top notch. I'd personally avoid any brand other than the ones I just mentioned. Oddly, I use the Sigma 2X due to the fact that it doesn't slow down focus if you are using good glass to begin with, the canon 2X does and costs about $100 more to boot.

Does it degrade picture quality? In a word... Yes. If you stick with one of the brands above you'll likely not be unhappy with the results.

good luck

I have the 2x Sigma to accompany my 70-200mm f/2.8. Of course I only use it during the day. I do notice, but only slightly, degradation (is this a word) in my shots.

The only real complaint is when I open the lens up to 200mm (hence 400mm x 1.6 = 640mm) does the lens not focus well. Therefore, I don't go all the way with it and all is well.

Keep in mind,. the good ones (ie Canon and Sigma) are designed to only work with specific lenses. They will not work with other lenses. Both Canon and Sigma have lists of compatible lenses on there sites.

Don't get a 3X (the Kenko?)
There isn't a lens out there that will autofocus with a 3X converter.

Lastly,. let us know what lenses you are looking to use,. then we will have more specfic answers.

Thanks for all the info!! I don't think I am going to get one now, the more I look into them the more I realize my lenses aren't good enough to make it worth my while!! The Teleconverter multiplies the f-stop as well... making my F4.5-6.0 virtually useless unless I have tons of light!! I hope to buy a good lens soon!!

Thanks again!
