A Gig is a style of boat. John Wilkie, named the harbor after a style of boat. The same style of boat he and his crew were useing when they discovered the harbor.
Gig Harbor, at one time had the largest fishing fleet, in the Puget Sound.

great photographs. i like that dark contrasting to the gold (& green light) shade in the first.

When was the statue erected? I have never seen it. I know right where that is at though... I want to go to the end of the harbor and shoot back towards the mountain just after sundown sometime to see what effects I can get off the water and perhaps lights reflecting off the harbor.
