Recently I found that my 420EX cannot detect ETTL when attach to my 300D? However the flash automatic to change to ETTL and works with my Canon G1.
It seems that there are some problems with my 300D.
Any cause may encounter this situation?
Thanks!

On the 420EX flash, the red indicator "E-TTL" should light up without the flash even being attached to the camera.
So, if attaching it to the camera causes the indicator to be inhibited, you know that the camera is doing it.
You might try the different mode settings on the camera, and make sure that the shutter speed is at or below the sync speed, just to be on the safe side.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your advice. The flash works again and I guess it is due to contact problem.

Contacts:
If this was a completely new flash unit, then it is possible that the least little bit of oil was present on the contacts, either on the flash side or on the camera hot shoe side. Of course, that will prevent normal operation.
Further, if the contacts mate correctly, but if they are only 95% tight, then all bets are off.
Each time I go to mount a flash unit on a hot shoe, I carefully wipe the normal fabric of a shirt across each set of contacts, and that seems to get good results.
