Had the pleasure of shooting Arturo "Thunder" Gatti for the ninth time in his Welterweight title challenge of Carlos Baldomir. While he lost this time out, he once again gave the crowd their money's worth...

Thanks guys,
Cory, no strobes at all, they are not permitted...
All the photos were shot with either a 1DMarkIIN with a 24-70 f2.8L, or a 1DMarkII with a 70-200 f2.8L...

Like I said, call me if you need me. If I don't hear from you Thursday I will likely be ringing you up early Friday.
[Edit: Ed will be shooting at the Chumash Casino Resort on Saturday, which is my venue, and I plan to meet up with him. His hotel for the match is in my little town of 6000 and only about a mile from my house.]

Superdiver, I just assume you aware that Ed Mulholland, "muls" here, is one of the premier boxing photographers in the world ... we are generally more awed by his work than anything else. :-) I will be shooting shoulder to shoulder with him on Saturday night at an HBO boxing event and am fluttery in the tummy just thinking about it. He is also one of those who guides and mentors the less fortunate when his schedule permits.

Ed, I watched this fight and I think I saw you at ringside. Your shots are excellent as always.
Is your timing that good, or do you fire off bursts of shots?
Also, who was the photographer who was right on top of Arturo when he went down for the final time? He was like between the ropes with his camera right in his face. I loved that.

Well, with all your practice with lighting you should do especially well in the "other place!" Hope you have lots of stamina for this marathon. Where you guys doing the HBO... Vegas? I envy you the opp to shoot with Muls! btw, I took your advice and just bought some lens cleaner! Can't wait to see your shots, although it probably won't be until mid next week before we see them filter though all the sleep you will need to catch up!;)

The event will be at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California ... same place I am shooting all this other stuff which is 7.5 miles from my house. Due to the posting restrictions here I am more like to simply post a link to my website and it may be a couple of weeks ... I am very busy ... you can check my blog. I am going to try to hang with Ed at least part of tomorrow, but I know he will be very busy as he has not been here before.

MDJAK,
I generally shoot one shot at a time, rarely do I shoot a burst, except in the case of a knockdown...you'd be surprised how easy you can shoot off a burst and get crap...As far as the photographers by Arturo when he went down, you had a NY Post photog, then Al Bello (shaved head) and myself (Red Hat)...
As for the flattery, thanks, it's appreciated, of course I'll meet Dwight tomorrow and then his image of me will be shattered...hehe...

Is your timing that good, or do you fire off bursts of shots?
Mark, I have found exactly what Ed says about bursts ... 8.5 fps doesn't do a thing for 95% of the shots ... you have to watch, watch, watch, anticipate and fire. The image you want happens in 1/40th of a second. The burst is 8.5 frames in a second which means five one-second bursts that cover just the right periods will yield one good shot ... BUT, the likelihood that you get the right one-second is about one in ten, so that's 400 frames and luck. Even I do much, much better watching and anticipating and I am a newbie.
I tend to run bursts when one boxer has been hit and the other goes into a flurry of punching one after another for several seconds ... sometimes you get the "final" punch in there somewhere.
I have noticed that I often hear a shutter firing next to me and see a great punch that I had no idea was coming. I also hear my shutter firing because I saw a boxer lean and flinch or tense but no other shutters and no punch. I get a lot of images of guys just looking at each other. The best shooters are often those who were once boxers.

Ed and Dwight,
thank you both for those well thought out answers. Somehow, I thought that's how you guys did it, meaning one shot at a time.
I know when I shoot a burst, for some reason it makes me a bit nervous and I tend to shake a bit. I rarely get good results from it.
Have fun at the HBO event. Can't wait to see your results.

Ed, one more thing if you don't mind.
I just visited your boxing photo website. Just fantastic. I noticed you also shot UFC. Do you shoot through the chain link fence? Also, how do you compare it to boxing? It appears a bit harder to get good shots as you have to watch both the legs and hands and often times it turns into a wrestling match.

Mark,
UFC is a bit harder because the lighting usually isnt as good and they mix in a bunch of different color lights as well...you do shoot through the fence, which just about eliminates the use of auto-focus...I'll still use it from time to time, but your mainly tweaking it manually. It's a switch for me because I shoot boxing pretty tight, whereas with UFC, you tend to shoot wide when they are standing...Fun to shoot though, but I generally only shoot the ones on the east coast, so I dont get to cover it as much as I'd like...

Missed that Gavin, didnt know we were on the Sportsshooter VA together...cool...
Shot the weigh-in today, nothing real interesting...The normal stage that they would do it on couldnt be used because of a KISS concert (where Dwight is now) so it was in a small meeting room in the hotel lobby. Not the most attractive setting...Dwight, who didnt have to shoot the weigh-in spent the time shooting me shooting the weigh-in (pretty funny) Funnier still was when one of the boxing PR guys asked Dwight for some photos to go out to the web sites (they cant use mine) and Dwight had to tell him he spent it shooting pictures of me...hehe...The HBO people probably think I get paid too much now because I have my own "personal' photographer...
I get to go see the wine country in the morning with my personal photog though...should be cool to shoot...

I left KISS after two songs tonight to be with my family watching a "Movie in the Park" ... Ice Age ... across the street in the park. I will post shots of Ed shooting the weigh-in when I get caught up, sigh! :-)
For those wondering, Muls is significantly more impressive than you would ever guess by his mild mannered appearances! I am renaming him "Muls the Magician!"

Good morning! I found an image of Ed from the boxing weigh-in ... he was regaling all of us with songs and stories of his heroic past    which he must do often because he had the whole storyline on his Mac so that it was really a multimedia show!
He knows all the big name boxers and they do what he asks ... one of the benefits of fame I think. It was a real joy watching him work, listening to his interactions, and generally basking in the glow. I am also including an image of the boxers and managers getting a lecture from the California boxing commissioner so you can get a little bit of a feel for the ambience.

Ice Age...love that movie...Dwight lies, no fighters listen to me (just the letters of the network I'm shooting for on this one), I just happened to be one of the only photogs around (like I said Dwight was busy making me feel important by documenting me) so they had no choice but to hear me...god I hate being on the other side of the camera...as far as the multimedia show, cant deny that, always have your portfolio with you, never know who you will run into...hehe...

Gavin, you were never out of our thoughts ... over there shooting all the brightly colored cricketeers in the fresh clean outdoors while we were stuck in a small room with a mass of testosterone laden men who were filling out endless forms and stripping off their clothes to weigh-in ... not my preference of activities ... hope it will be balanced by tonight's ring girls. I just wish I could have gotten Ed into KISS but there was hardly room for me! :-)

Yup, the "silver" was sequins. I was sitting right next to the steps they walk up to get into the ring, sigh ... I'll post something at some point to show the position. They are really, really very nice ... I found out last night that one is an interior decorator. They apparently bring their boyfriends who get to sit with them ... they are the biggest yellers and screamers in the crowd, urging them to wilder antics, but once they are sitting they are holding hands and are really rather smooshy-goo!
Oh, well, no, I bailed on KISS (after shooting my two songs) to go home and walk across the street from my house where my tiny town (6000) was showing Ice Age in the school yard on a sheet tied up to the backstop of the baseball diamond to be with my daughter and wife. I even made it before the movie started. I bought a $1 bag of popcorn and had a grand time with my daughter in her footie pajamas in my lap!

Thanks ... Ed made me do it! I can't say enough nice stuff about Ed ... my whole boxing shooting experience will be forever changed by his visit ... I know I am a bit of a romantic, but hanging on his coattails for one event showed me tons of things that I would have spent years and years to learn. He showed me how to shoot a weigh-in and before the fights pointed out the people I should get shots of like Lennox ... I had no idea who Lennox was! And Ed's dressing room shots were magical.
Ed, due to KISS processing requirements I have only just reviewed my images from the fights. Amost nothing good from Vivian's fight but a couple of good head jerkers from Joshua's bout. I am obliged to process Al Green before I can get to uploading the fight images, sigh, so maybe tomorrow evening. Generally I would have them next day. So, what's the URL for your images at HBO?

Well, Ed is certainly fearless! He went from shooting landscapes to shooting miniature horses on the little photosafari I took him on and didn't bat an eyelash! I took him to Los Olivos which was Mayberry for Andy Griffith's show and he didn't skip a beat there, either. The guy can actually shoot anything and make art from it!
And he never stopped helping me and his assistant the whole night of fights ... kept coming down the mat to show me what he captured so I could put images together with where he stood and leaned. We were so busy having a good time I forgot to pull out the 15mm fisheye for a Gavin Ellis shot.
