I checked into using a web based print service. They insist on receiving files that have been saved as an 8 bit, level 10 JPG, sRGB colorspace. I am having a hard time reconciling their opinion with the 1st Law of Thermodynamics (among other things). Less can never be more or equal. I decided to see what the difference in the file size of the various formats is. I started with a RAW image. I did no processing and saved the image step by step. Here's the steps and the resultant file size:
RAW file size- 13,479k
Do nothing. Save as 16 bit TIF- 97,370k
Convert to 8 bit and Save- 48,703k
Save as Level 12 JPG- 7,063k
Save as Level 10 JPG- 2,551k
The simple change from 16 bit to 8 bit tosses 50% of the data into the trash. The save to level 12 jpg is even more drastic. If I am to believe what the printer is trying to tell me then I can throw away my 1DsMkII and go back to a 4Mb point and shoot. Apparently there is no need to worry about sensor size. Apparently some of the pixels are really "air"... Bull... Size matters
