View Full Version : Help! Bright light, coming through viewfinder!

I hope this is the correct place to ask this question.
I was shooting football the other day and the Sun was very bright and low behind my shoulder.
When I was taking pics I noticed some were hazy almost foggy. To see the readings in the viewfinder I had to place my hand next to my eye.
I realise now that the foggy pics were caused by the sun light shining through the viewfinder. But how do the experienced sport shooters, stop this from happening?
Added I use a 70-200 2.8L plus 2 x converter (when plenty of light) with lense hood
Cheers

Its clean.
It's a brand new 30D.
Many shots looked great but some of the raw images looked hazy due to the light getting through.

I think I'm confused; are you trying to say that the sun was to your back, and that light seeped in through the eye piece, and exposed on to your picture?
I've never had this happen personally, and I'm not sure that it actually could happen as I think the mirror would block the light while it was in the up position when the sensor was being exposed.
Can you post a picture of the what you think happened?

Kevin is correct. The light can't get to your sensor when the mirror is up. Canon does sell an eyepiece cup.

Yep thats what i'm getting at. The Sun was very strong behind me. So strong I couldn't read the readings in the viewfinder when I covered it up around my eye with my hand I could see much better.
If you read the manual look for "using the Eyepiece cover"
It says that stray light CAN enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured.
This is why the eyepice cover is added to the canon strap.
I'll try to put a picture up a little later.
