A couple of Mikko Hirvonen (WRC Ford Focus driver) themed pics from this weekends Rally Day at Castle Combe.. before the thunder storms

First day out with the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 strapped to the front of the 300D, takes a bit of getting used to over the kit lens hehe.

Comments welcome, last one could do with a bit of a crop but otherwise still a good pic imho.

Neil:

I really like the panning in the car shots. I find them a bit dark on my monitor but that could just be me. How about a bit bigger DOF, it seems at the front of the car is slightly out of focus but spot on at the drivers door. Great background and wheel blur.

The people shots are good, nice relaxed feeling, but I feel that the face needs some fill lighting. Did you have a flash?

Tks for sharing

hi john

yeah i did notice the DOF issue after i downloaded the pics to my laptop, unfortunately its not something i picked up on the cameras LCD.. that pic was shot in TV at 250 because at the time i was concentrating on trying to capture the speed (that thing shifts!).

i didnt use the flash, i only have the built in one available at the mo and i was that far away that i dont think it would of made a difference if i had.

thanks for your comments.

Agree with the fill flash but the dop I dont think is an issue. rather the focusinf point in relation to the pan. The car is pretty much side on to the lens but not quite. looking at the image the focus point was close to the middle of the car. If you look closely the car is slightly out of focus both ends.

Pan shots can vary a lot depending on the effect the photographer wants to acheive. Shutter speeds, apertures and focus point all have a bearing on it. Next time why not out experimant with it see the different effects.

hi dave!

all is good, tho busy at the new job.. finally got round to getting the sigma!

had a panic on friday when the LCD stopped working on the 300D, turned out to be a slightly dodgy TV-out socket.

should be back online during the evenings soon, just need to get a landline and b'band installed at home.

see you soon
