It just means you do not have FTP functions installed in your server's PHP. Contact server admin, they are the only ones who can install it.
Before FTP module is in PHP, EE can not upload.

Ok, I contacted the web host administratr and was advised that an ftp function may not be available with their version of PHP. I will not know until Monday.
If that is the case what can I do....can I still upload manually via WSFtp myself and will that allow me to use all the other functionality of EE?
Please advise.

One other question, if I can send image files to the upload folder via ftp in EE, doesn't that mean that my server has ftp / php capability?
I can upload image files but I can't take those files, resize them. that is when I get the ftp error message.
Please advise.

The "SEND TO SERVER" command uses HTTP protocol, not ftp.

Ok, I heard from my server's admin and they do not have ftp installed with PHP for security reasons as I am on a shared server.
so what now? As a previously asked, can I still up load and resize images manually and have full fucntion from the other EE features. I woud appreciate a response on this.
Thanks

Lousiest excuse I've ever heard. Basically 99% of worlds websites are on shared (virtual) servers. FTP with PHP is no security risk, it uses same username and password autentication as you normally use. If they still refuse, ask them to install SSL FTP instead! I can modify EE to use secure FTP quite easily. Point them to http://fi2.php.net/manual/en/function.ftp-ssl-connect.php for more info.

When you do not use EE's upload page, you loose EXIF reading, IPTC reading, resize and upload. To implement these features to manual input is currently not possible at all due time limitations. Maybe one day but I won't promise anything. Sorry.

Ok thanks. I'll get back to the ISP and see what I can do.
Thanks for keep up with this situation. I will advise.
I may have to move my ISP.
