been trying to find this type of shot for a while.
sometimes see good locations with no parking facilities, or one were i can park and the bales are covered in bags.
had a nice sky, but now thinking i would prefer a stormy sky

Good capture, and yes very lucky to get them without the black plastic.

I see your in Wigan, where did you take these photos, I got some near Worthington Lakes a week or so ago but like you I would like a more interesting sky. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=192045

I've been looking to get some shots like this myself. I live out in the English countryside and see scenes like this regularly. There is a certain time usualy late in the afternoon when the sun lights up these fields of gold in a magical way. I'm just waiting for the farmers to finish their bailing because soon we will have rolling hills as far as the eye can see covered in these circular bales just like last year when I never had my camera on me at the right moment.

Parking is a problem for me too so I plan to be armed with my camera and commuting on my bike so i can pull up and get the shot when the time is right.

Nice work.

dont live that far from worthington lakes.
these were in cheshire taken last night.
not sure of the exact location but we were close to altringham and not far from the airport. all round that location its quite nice. but them farmers dont waste any time sticking the black or green bags on them

just to mention , these were taken just prior to sunset. the sun was setting to the right of me, so gave off that nice warm glow

I was going to ask how you got the nice glow, the colour in number 2 is super, but you told us now. I took mine at near midday, and are a bit washed out.

So I note to the local farmers, if you see someone tramping about your field near sunset it will be me

I honestly don't understand the allure of round bales, but you captured them at the right time of day and did a nice job with the colors and contrast.

And those are STRAW bales. It's the stalks of grain (like wheat, oats or barley) that are left over after the grain is harvested. Straw has almost zero nutritional value and is used for livestock bedding. Hay is an entirely different product, though it's often harvested in round bales the same way.
