View Full Version : 10D USB slow??

As I haven't yet bought a reader for my 10D, I've been using the camera's USB connection to download. I had the bright idea of using my old G2 as a card reader, and immediately thought it was quicker. So I tried a test today, transfering the same 29 RAW files first from the 10D, then swapped the 512Mb Sandisc Ultra card and downloaded from the G2. The G2 was almost exactly twice as fast as the 10D.

???

Just wondering if this sounds normal, or if there is something up with my 10D's USB connection ?

Wierd???

I really woudn't know as I have never plugged any camera into a PC,.. I allways use a card reader.

I have a snazzy new USB2 reader I got for $18.00 thats really fast...

But there is no logical reason why a 10D should be slower with the same card than a g2.

Seems another good reason to get a card reader though :)

If you have a laptop, go for a PCMCIA card reader.

I use one and it's *a lot* faster than my G2.

Andy

Are the cheap ($20-30) USB readers a lot faster than just hooking up the camera?

All depends.

The 10D with a direct cable connection uses USB 1 standard, so it is fairly slow.

If you buy a USB 2 card reader and connect it to a USB 2 socket on your PC, you will then see a huge speed increase in downloading files from the card.

I went out and bought a USB 2 card reader after the second time I used the 10D :)

I have a Rebel D30, it's pretty slow.... Is there a difference between USB1 and USB 2?? How do I know what my computer has?

Thanks!

I'm not sure how you can tell which your PC has,. but yes there is a big speed difference between the two. Unfortunatley there is no easy way to tell the difference,. they are totally compatible with eachother so a USB2 device will function fine on a USB1 PC,. it will just be limited to a USB1 speed.

you couls check in "Device manager"

In my case on my PC it has a "USB host controller" label on the standard USB1

but the USB2 is labeled "Enhanced" ???

But I can't tell you if they will all say that?

USB 1 is 12 Mbits/s
USB 2 is 480 Mbits/s
(depending of the connected device)

To answer one of the questions above:-
A card reader will be *lots* quicker than connecting the 10D to your computer, even a USB 1/1.1 card reader is nearly twice as fast.
USB 2.0 is much quicker, and is only limited by the speed of your compactflash card, which cannot read anywhere near as quick as USB 2 can transfer.

Which would make the Canon G2 as fast as a USB 1 Card Reader, (at twice the speed of the 10D). Which makes me wonder, why is the 10D's USB connection soooo slow?

That's why we all use readers. I was never aware that the 10D was slow even to USB1 standards. I have never connected my 10D or my D60 up to my PC.

CDS, you realise that the 10D has USB 1.1, NOT 2.0! I recon that is why the cardreader option is a much faster and better option. I wish they had put USB 2.0 and/or firewire on that one, maybe on the next generation 10D??? I just might upgrade to that one if/when, and use the 10D as back-up. Imagine that. I really like the 10D!

YES! It doesnt matter if you have USB 1 or 2, the reader will still work faster than the r e a l s l o o o o o w w s p e e d
of the camera.

Take $20 to Walmart if you have to and get one.

You might also like to investigate some of the firewire card readers available. These are faster again than the USB readers, although this speed incurs a higher cost for the reader; and also requires a firewire card for your PC.

Reasonably new to the market is Lexar's FireWire CF reader : http://www.lexarmedia.com/readers/rw019.html

I thought USB 2.0 was marginally faster than FireWire ?

Doesn't really matter as the cards are still sloooooow in comparison, even the fast ones.

You will se no speed difference in Firewire reader Vs. a USB2 reader. Both interfaces are faster than the cards.

get either one and you will see a huge improvemnet.

On papaer,. USB2 is marginally faster than Forewire,. HOWEVER, in practice Firewire wins out as it is more robust and deos not rely so heavily on the the system/cpu for its speed,. thus it is preferred fro applications where sustained speed is important such as video etc. (similar to the differences between SCSI and ATA,. ATA 100 "Should" be faster than Ultra2 SCSI's 80 MBS speed,. but for hard drive intensive apps SCSI @ 80 is faster than ATA @ 100)
