Many people will tell you that sunsets should have some forground interest. I don't agree with them. this is a great shot.

Nice shot CDS. Love the detailing in the various cloud layers.

See, you can use a wide angle lense after all :)

Cheers

That's awesome man! You should shoot sunsets more often. Trust me... they're way easier to get shots of than Heron. That whole flying away thing can be problematic :D

Well on the subject of foregrounf interest, I think the reflections of the sky on the water are very interesting, and they are in the foreground - sortof....
Fab shot CDS

Great picture! I really like the sky..don't know what your saying about other great photo's and this is not as spectacular.because to me this is a beautiful sunset. I would like to see some more sunset shot from you in the future, but this one is a good start with a great captured dramatic sky.

thanks for sharing

Wow, thanks team,. I didn't think I would get such nice comments :)

New Girl,.
"spectacular" ? I think that is a first for me. Thanks!

--------------------------------------------------------

Geecee,
Thank you fo the kind words. There is that little rock to the left in the foreground! :D lol

--------------------------------------------------------

Ian,
lol :D yep,.. when there isn't enough light for the big lens,. then I will strap on that wide angle! As the days get darker I am gettimg in more practice. :)

--------------------------------------------------------
Laz,
Well,. you need to be quick with sunsets too... :)

Thanks!
--------------------------------------------------------

Richard,
Thank you. I was happy with the reflections as well! I was not aware of them while shooting though,.

there was in fact more foreground that I cropped out, (it was the edge of a man made stone embankment,. not too pretty)

--------------------------------------------------------

BobG3,
Thank you for your commnets and encouragement. I will look for more sunsets! I promise. :)

Well its beautiful. Indeed all sunsets are beautiful -- and like all photos -- it is hard to pass on the "experience" in a 2D visual.

I think that a realted ssue is that if you don't practice nailing them all -- you may not ace out the one withmy G2 -- I do not properly use its exposeuer controls (e.g. e-comp and histogram) in similar situations. I should get out and practice the same shot.

lol,. the above was one of about 15-20 RAW shots... :D I spun the exposure compensation dial back and forth like I was playing "Tempest"* :D

Tempest ? LOL :) I remember it well.

I actually do the same thing. As you may have noticed, most of my sunsets are from almost the same location, which is actually 5 minutes walk from my house. Combine that with lots of CF memory and a digital camera and "spinning" all the controls is exactly what I can now do that you would never do with film.

I often set up and take some normal, i.e. well thought out shots. I then usually bung on the ND grads and do the same.

As the colours really start to kick in I tend to start using auto bracket and I'll swing the bracket distance about as well as overall exposure compensation. I don't look at the results apart from to check the histo. I just bang off shots until the card(s) are full and then wait until I get back on the computer to see what I have. Doing it this way is kind of liberating as I usually spend a lot of time thinking about all my other shots, but sunsets, I tend to experiment, or as I'll now rename it, "Shoot Tempestuously" :)

Happy shooting.

Thanks again,. part of the succes here is my new understanding of Photoshop and the RAW plugin.

It amazing how good photos can become something special with the right post processing. As I get better at that,. photos that were just "nice" can become real keepers.
