Heyas, first post here. I'm a wanderer from FredMiranda.

I just got my reverse mount adapter for my Sigma 10-20mm lens. The adapter was about $15, and from what I can tell so far it's WELL worth it. Magnification varies from 3x (20mm) to 6x (10mm). All shots were handheld with flash.

The bottom shot is actually three shots in one; I focused on a different part of the fly for each shot (handholding was a bitch), and then combined the areas that are in focus with Helicon Focus to increase depth of field. Normal depth of field would be just the eyeball in focus. Using Helicon I was able to get the back eye in focus, parts of its legs, parts of its wing, and parts of its back. I still need to work on understanding Helicon a little more though. This was my first attempt.

Excellent shots- shows what can be done with a reversed lens.
Was this straight onto the camera body ?
I'm a fan of focus stacking (the helicon bit) but use the freeware prog combinez5 to do it.

Heyas. I actually had a person with your 10-22mm ask me the same question today. Get this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/77mm-Reverse-Mount-for-Canon-EOS_W0QQitemZ180005188408QQihZ008QQcategoryZ15235Q QssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and you should be golden.

To stop down the lens all you have to do to change the aperture is set the aperture desired on the camera, then press and keep holding down the DOF preview button next to the lens release button. Then unmount the lens while still pressing the preview button and the lens will stay stopped down :)

Then reverse it and do your thing...

Yup, this was straight onto the camera. I NEED to learn how to use CombineZ because Helicon isn't free. Do you know of any CombineZ tutorials?

The fly in #3 IS that color. It's about a quarter of an inch and very iridescent.

The bugs in #4 were solid black and dark grey. I chose to selectively desaturate the leaf they were on and bring out some shadow detail. Then I upped the red saturation a bit to give them a bit more color to please the eye.

Wow.

Thanks! I have absolutely no idea what the second guy was. Not a grasshopper though... it was about a quarter of an inch long.

Can anyone identify it?

Nice images. Welcome to the p.o.t.n macro forums!

Very nice! What is the approximate working distance on a combo like this... and how does a lens reversal compare to extension tubes? Higher magnification?

Thanks! Working distance from 10-20mm are both the same for practical purposed; they're both really close. The 10mm end is about 2 inches. 20mm end is about 2.5-3 inches. 10mm plus 65mm of extension tubes gets you about 1.5 inches, but this brings you literally into the 11-12x magnification range.

Compared to extension tubes, definitely greater magnification. It's hard to compare the two because of the huge magnification gap. Let's just say that even with my reverse wideangle, I still won't get rid of the extension tubes because they still have their uses. Besides, you can put extension tubes ON reverse lenses to get crazy magnifications, as pointed out above.
