Welcome to the forum. In order to view a raw image, you have to have software that opens and converts them to Tiff files or more common place JPEG files. Digital Photo Professional by Canon and Adobe's Raw Plugin are two that come to mind. Without the software, the computer will not recognize the .CR2 file name. Hope this helps :)

Is there any software that came with the camera. Digital Photo Professional. If not, go to Adobe's website and download the Raw Plugin

How are you moving the pictures from the card to the computer? I've read about other people having problems downloading raw direct from the camera. If you use a card reader there shouldn't be any problem getting them to the computer. Then use DPP or even Canon's EOSViewer software to bring up the images. Edit in DPP which is free from Canon or with CS2.

Easiest way of converting your in camera raw files is download the files via raw shooter essentials, which is free from pixmantic.

Do I just need a program like rawshooter?? I have photoshop but can find RAW... Rawshooter works great and I think you'll find a lot of the folks here use it, inlcuding me. You can download the free version, Rawshooter Essentials 2006 from this web site, http://www.pixmantec.com/products/rawshooter_essentials.asp
Have fun..

alternatively you can grab the files off of the card with a card reader. unlike reading from the camera you can access the cf card like you would a hard drive, then use your program of choice to edit.

Use the card reader to transfer them. You will be able to go into Windows Explorer then and at least see that the file is there. You will need a program to view them and edit them as others have said. Microsoft has a free Raw Viewer as one of their Power Toys for XP.

I had this problem too until I found out that Canon's Zoom Browser does not transfer RAW files automatically. I just use Copy To from explorer.

Your XT came with software that handles RAW files very nicely. I just loaded my software last weekend and it's very intuitive. You can browse all of the images, make changes (white balance, saturation, etc.) and then just "Convert and Save As" when you're ready to save as a jpeg. Works pretty well.

You might want to try and download the Lightbox beta version from Adobe (since they just bought out RAW shooter) since RAW shooter won't be continued.

You can use this raw converter: http://www.rawtherapee.com/ or raw shooter essentials (free).
Avoid lightroom at all costs, it is sloooooow, hogs CPU and memory and will irritate you enough to drive a truck over your computer unless you have a top of the line high powered PC.
