I am not sure it is OK or not but if you want to try, you need to take RISK.
A Korean photographer tried to use a cut-down EF-S 18-55mm len with Canon 10D. As you may know the len is specially designed and work for Cannon 300D only.
Here is the original post and photos:

Some photos taken by 10D and with this len:

Good grief! It looks like he made the modifications with a chain saw --- a dull one at that!!
Pictures seem a little soft. The close-up of the vegetables is particulary fuzzy looking.
Still, for the money, it isn't a bad focal range for the 10D.
After seeing the picture of the altered lens, though, I really don't think I'm going to sleep tonight. I know i'm going to skip supper!

I don't know Korean either but I could hazard a guess at what was said:
Are you freaking crazy?
Are you on crack?
You ruined a perfectly good lens! What a hack job!
OMG!
Probably something along those lines. Can you even buy that lens? I didn't think it was for sale except on the camera.
Anyway, please, PLEASE don't do that.

I can see one lens that won't be going to Canon for a warranty repair!

I'm embarrassed for that guy. I mean at least have some class and use a Dremel instead of a chain saw.

Nope. The Sigma 18-50mm, including an EOS version, has already left the delivery room -- by mama Sigma. It appears to work on any Canon EOS.

I think you're right! While the descriptions are identical, the first one is listed at about US$135 for the 300D; the second is about US$160 for the 300D,10D,D60,D30 and 1D.
Now, you don't suppose they're simply charging an extra $25 to hack the end off? ; )
Seriously, this looks for real.

Why would you want to put a 1.6 Liter 75 horsepower engine with the 4th cylinder removed into your 5 series BMW?
The EF-S lens costs (additional) $100 and it's worth it. No more. When you hack off the rear, its quality will be reduced because of reflections between sensor and rear glass element, making it a $50 lens.
Pleeeeeeease - stay serious with you 10D!

(I got the 300D with the kit lens three days ago and I'm going to sell the lens on ebay...)

From what I've read, the EF-S 15-55 lens only comes packaged with the Digital Rebel/300D camera and is not sold separately. So, does that mean that these supposedly Canon EF-S lenses are just cheap (and fake) knock-offs of the original?

Hey, you can spend all you want on any "L"ense you want and it still won't make you a better photographer !

But a cheap lens can make good pictures look like crap ;o)

I don't think he needed a Dremel© as the ring he removed is most likely plastic. I'm sure it was just whittled away with an Exacto© knife or perhaps a paring knife from his kitchen. No big loss to him because it will most certainly still fit on what it was originally intended to fit. A small lathe would be best, in my opinion, to remove the ring and wouldn't take long at all. Biggest problem I see is keeping the whittling debris from falling into the mechanism.

You sometimes hear some amazing stories. I once encountered a thread on a view camera discussion group where a fella was complaining that his new Schneider Symmar 300 MM F: 5.6 lens would not work on his view camera because the hugh rear element group would not fit through the hole on the front lens standard. That could be a problem because that lens is very big (and heavy). The man received a reply which advised him to unscrew and remove the rear element group and then the lens would fit OK. It would . . . but of course it then would not work! That lens was not designed as a so-called convertable and it needed all its elements to function. Oh well, it was good for a few laughs anyway.

Not quite. It only comes packaged with the Rebel/300D and not sold separately when you purchase it from a legitimate retailer. I am sure that there are many "questionable" dealers who sell the Rebel/300D at discount rate without the lens -- and then sell the lens separately.
