I've seen a lot of comments, mostly negative connotations, about chimping, but isn't this one of the beauties of digital photography? I guess I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing as some would make it out to be. I'm just curious as to why those of you who think chimpings is a negative thing think that way. Thanks!

Well, I'm not going to say I don't do it often. I wish I chimped more so I can see the exposure and change the settings appropriately. Since I got my release, I have been seeing much more of the actual poses of the subjects and that's helped a lot. But I found myself chimping this last vacation with my film camera. That's funny.

You can't really tell much from the screen. I keep the histogram enabled on mine so I can check exposure from time to time. But if you're covering a fast paced situation, like a sporting event or a wedding, you don't really have much time to constantly chimp. And besides, my friends make fun of me if they see me looking. :)

I chimp so does that make me a chump?

I chimp to check for good composition, blown highlights, and exposure with the histogram.

I believe if someone says that they never chimp......................well, they lie.

Well I definitely feel better now! I was worried I wouldn't make it into the highly qualified photographers group because even with a lens hood I'm a chimping fool! ;) Actually I still might not make it into the highly qualified photographers group, but it's good to know it won't be because I chimp! :)

Cimping is called that because usually when its more then one person wanting to look at the pictures on the back of the camera. So you have a few people looking at a tiny screen sort of looking like monkey's looking at a new toy. And in a group chimpers say things like "Ooo there's a good one" "Ooo look at Kristens smile!" "Aah that ones too bad it didnt turn out" "Aah that's an amazing shot" or Ooo Ooo Aah Aah :)

It's ok to chimp privately but I always object when someone wants to see my unfinnished work and waste my batteries to do it, especially before I got cameras that came with rechargeable batteries!

I think chimping CAN be bad. The reason is sometimes, that split second you look at the screen, you could have possibly missed a better shot.

I always chimp...It's disgusting...I need special meds for it...:)

That video was great!! I have to chimp because I need to know if I have a decent shot because I don't trust myself yet.

My buddy got me into photography (we're both newb's but he's had more experience) and when we get together we do like the guy on the video says... we sit there and look at each others screen and go, 'OOO! That was a good one...' :D

Thanks for the welcome kevbailey!! POTN is my new favorite spot.

Yup, Ke. My favorite part is the English girl who gets caught chimping and then admits she knows nothing of American Football. Too good. :) Never mind her lens is the same size she is.

I'll admit it. I chimp... at the beginning of a shoot or if my light changes or i'm making adjustments.... I've actually gotten pretty lazy about chimping lately.. not fun to go home and have to sort through the shots that I should have deleted before downloading.. But, it definately keeps me ego in check.. I actually feel like I should be chimping more than I do...

I thought it was quite interesting the other night. I went to the state park last week to get some sunset shots over Lake Michigan and there were 4 photographers out there shooting senior pictures. Actually it was almost funny to watch each of the groups (4 to 6 kids in each) make their way around the sand and then onto the pier.
Each photog would take time to get their subject posed and take one or two pics and then "chimp" to check his shots. The guy I watched for a while would chimp his shot but I never saw him re-take a picture.
And yes, I chimp. But........very seldom do I show someone else the picture and I never, ever coo or say "Oh! look at this shot.

I tend to take a lot before chimping, and usually i cant be bothered to go all the way back through my images to find the one I may have had a doubt about. I find the 1.5s preview on mine tells me all I need to know! :)

I primarily chimp to check the histogram. But I also chimp after every first shot to check the exposure especially when I shoot grey and check my custom WB. I chimp after I've fired off a series of shots when time permits. I chimp when I'm bored and there's nothing else to do. I chimp to check focus. I chimp to protect files. I chimp to check for blown highlights. I chimp to add audio files for mental notes. Whatever excuse I give to chimp, the bottom line remains I'm a big chimpin' fool.

A Noink user taking shots at a local horse show this morning - I did check my histogram a couple of times though... Honest :-)
