I hear there are going to be a number of "filters" in the new PhotoShop CS, but for those that can't wait, I thought I'd share an easy way to create an ND (neutral density?) filter in PhotoShop. This makes plain boring skies quite dramatic in one fell swoop without having to "select" or "mask".
1) First of all, choose a light to medium gray as your foreground colour, (white background colour).
2) Click on the gradient tool and choose "foreground to transparent" type and "colour burn" mode.
3) Drag a line from the top of your picture to, say, the bottom of the sky, and let go. Repeat if necessary.
This looks particularly good on skies with a bit of cloud in them, and if you use an orange colour instead of grey, it's like using a "warm-up" filter in a film camera.
