Hello All,
I'm using a 350D with 400 f5.6. I generally set ISO to 400, sometimes 800. I'm very pleased with the noise levels but occaisionally find some need a little reduction. For this I have been using PSP or Neat Image. The trouble is this then seems to reduce the file size dramatiaclly. I shoot JPEG and in the highest quality.
Is this a common effect of using noise reduction software or am I missing a trick?
I suspect I perhaps should be learning RAW technique.
Any thoughts and advice on this subject would be much apreciated.
Thanks.

I've never tried PSP nor claim to know what it is but I'm familiar w/ NI. If you are using the Trial/Demo version then es it will reduce the sizeof the original jpeg and you will also loose some data while saving it. The PS NI plugin won't have that effect since it does the NR while the image is open in PS.

RAW will shrink your photos also. I have noise issues with RAW.
But, Only with night photos. It seem my schedule (lately) has
allowed me night photo opts. Wanting to make the most of my photography excerience.
I have been taking advantage of the time.

Tonight I experimented with ISO. I have been working on a night noise problem.

The first posting will be
ISO 800, f22.0, 55mm, 10 seconds

The Second posting will be
ISO 1600, f22.0, 55mm, 10 seconds

I would like to add a third but, rules are rules...

I am looking for suggestions to handle the problem.
Maybe there is not one.

RAW will shrink if you convert to JPEG try converting to TIFF16 and ee how large it'll get. JPEG will always do some compression hen saved.

You can look at noise as being "extra unwanted color" in the under exposed, shadows, or dark areas of the image. For each extra color is an addition value. When you run a noise rduction program the unwanted color is replaced by an average value. The same will happen if you convert a color image to black and white...
