I had the opertunity to use my G3 this week end and try out the macro and close focus ability of the camera.

Although I have found in certain situations I would prefer the 10D for focus ability, I am able to compensate with the G3. For Fast subject I anticipate and preplan.

The only real problem I am having is with the LCD out side, even with a hoodman it is hard to view. Anyone with a good solution, I am all ears.

All in all I have found the camea focus right on the money and it's exposure capabilities awsome. I own a Sekonic L408 hand meter and it has the ability to take several readings and out them into memory for evaluation. I found that it is better but not by much, I am impressed at the G3 abilty.

If you are thinking of buying a G3 / G5, I say unless you can pluck down $1500 for the 10D, you wont be getting second best. the G3 cranks.

The shot In my pbase have only the contrast adjust + 7 to 10. I find that color to subject it right on with the G3.

Please keep talking! We seem to be in the same place with this camera, which I have owned for about three weeks. I had not previous digital camera experience.

I am thrilled with what I have gotten on automatic settings and encouraged by what I get from manual and other adjustments. Five hours after purchase, I took a bunch at a family cookout with everything on automatic. Wonderful! Otherwise, as I try to delve in, I must say that the results are not yet up to my old faithful 35mm, especially when I take slides. I feel as though I am working to get back to my present level.

Ed the first thing you want to do is go to program mode. TV & AV modes is just an extension to program. It does the same thing except in program it selects everything. In TV you select shutter and in AV you select Aperature.

Next is you select your white balance and ISO. For most shots ISO 50 or 100 is good. This allows the Camera to function faster.

When you shoot sports put it on TV mode select a shutter speed 1/500 - 1/1000 depending on the speed of your subject. the camera will sdelect your F stop. In AV mode you select the F stop less depth of field F 2.8 more F8.

For action shots use manual focus, focus on a spot and wait till the action gets there, anticipate the action.

I took pictures at my grandsons soccer game, it was the first time I used G3 for sports, the slight lag had the ball outside the picture area, so I used hyper focal length. Example if your subject is 10 feet away everything between 7 feet and 20 feet will be in focus at 28.8mm F stop F8. THat means you have an 18 foot infocus area.

When you have time practice differnt things. Take a subject and shoot it from high up from low down , right side , left side, study what you have done, then use your EV setting, set 1 sr top + and 1 stop - and compare it with the camera setting. An example is you have a subject with ther back to the sun, your camera will adjust for both subject and sun so your sunject will be under exposed. You have two choices open it up 1 to 2 stops to cominsate (EV setting) or use fill flash.

Hope this helps.
