View Full Version : Youth Sports League - Model Releases Necessary???

I've entered into a verbal agreement that I will shoot action pictures for a youth soccer league (AYSO) in my area. The board is concerned and at this point sound like they want to be able to obtain releases from all the parents.
If I, or the AYSO won't be using the images for advertising purposes or public sale, is that necessary? The images (prints only) will be sold to the child's family, that's it. I might consider holding onto them until the end of the season, back them up to tape and hold onto them for maybe 6 months..then kapoof.
So..I guess, what I'm really asking is, if releases are not necessary, which I don't think they are? How can I communicate that to the board effectively?

We have someone who does the same thing for AYSO here. As parents, we never signed anything. They had a day or two where they took pictures then a few weeks later they were for sale. They were printed with a copyright notice in the lower right-hand corner. They might have even had a stamp on the back saying they were not to be reproduced. I don't remember.

Disclaimer: I shoot kids and equestrian events, then parents buy prints.
I don't think it's necessary, but just the same, we talked with the instructor (or coach in your case) that if a new student comes in her barn, that a model release be signed by the parent/guardian which says that photos may be taken for use on brochure, website, etc. So while I don't think it's necessary, the instructor let them sign that paper... (along with the other forms that says if your kid falls off the horse and becomes paralyzed or died, that the instructor/stable is not liable, etc...)

I've had trader cards printed from mpix also. I wasn't really excited about them either. I have recieved a sample kit from proshooter direct and they look reallly nice. I've not ordered yet but I plan to soon. Several photographers on another forum that I'm on order from them and love their trader cards.

for all of the sports stuff that i do (mostly grade school/high school age), i have a model release built into the order form and make sure the parent(s) sign off before they get their images. then they get a copy and i get a copy. it also mentions the no-reproduction angle for the CDs.

Technically, you do need a model release, if you sell commercially. Of course if you sell direct to the parents then its not really as much an issue.
Going back to the technical part.
You own the photos regardless of the release.
But if you do photograph for commercial purposes, even an organization, there should be a model release given out in the contracts at the start. The only way you can shoot and make money off photos in the technical sense is if you sell for editorial use.

If you are still looking for nice trading cards, I've just recently found myprintingdepartment.com has great quality and pricing. They do the full service card setup but I layout out my own cards and they only charge $4.75 / 12 or $7 / 24. They ship the next day too which is nice. I also like their memory mates. Hope this helps! http://myprintingdepartment.com/

How do you fit it on your order form and how long is it? If you want you can PM me the answer or example
Thanks
