HELP Operating Two Drives On A IBM A31p Laptop PC I recently purchased an A31p IBM Laptop with Intel Pentium 4-m, CPU: 2 GH, 1,024 MB of RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive & Windows XP Pro Operating System. I also installed the UltraBay 2000 adapter with the 80 GB Hard Drive installed in it to store my Image Files and I want to use the 40 GB HD for Programs & my Operating System ONLY. Please advise on the Best & Most Efficient way to set this system up to easily access the images on the 80 GB Hard Drive (D Drive). At present, I do not know how to easily access the D Drive (image drive) while logged in on my C Drive (OS - program drive). Any Detailed Suggestions or explanation on how to use a C & D Drive would be greatly appreciated by a Newbie.

ANY ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTIONS WOULD ALSO BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thank You, Hersul (gho64)

What software do you use for image downloading?
Just put a folder on the D drive for your images, and tell the downloader software to use that folder.
You are not logged into the C drive, you are logged into windows, which happens to be on the C drive - so the D drive should be visible within windows explorer.
1 more thing, backup your images frequently - laptop drives are more likely to fail than desktop drives.

hersul,

I have basically the same setup on my Thinkpad T22 with smaller drives tho. Like Richard said you are in Windows and any program you use will be able to see your D drive. I created an icon on my desktop for the D drive just so I can click on it to open the D drive and Explore its contents. Did you also get a CDRW with your IBM? If so use it often to backup your images, however with your setup you will have to move them back to the C drive for burning to CD rom.

Good Luck!

As stated,. assumin the drive is installed correctly, you should have acces to the drive allready.

Click on "My computer" and see if the drive is there. If it is, then you allready have acces to it.

Hi Richard, Hickory & CyberDyne,

Thank You for your suggestions. I use BreezeBrowser to View & Convert my Image Files. HICKORY, Are you suggesting that I must transfer my images from the C Drive to the D Drive to burn them to a CD??? Any additional suggestions that will avoid that would be greatly appreciated. Have a great evening. Hersul (gho64)

With breezebrowser you should be able to "browse" :D to the folders you store your images in and work on them regardless of hard drive.

I am not at all sure what the "deal" with the cd-burning is. It seems to me as loing as the connection is fast enough and you have decent burning software you should be able to back up to CD-R images on either drive. I know I have no problem with this on my desktop with either of the 7 hard drives.

Your laptop will only be able to use the D drive as either a hard drive or a CDRW at separate times. So in order to back up any photos you've saved to the 2nd hard drive D, you'll have to put back the images onto your C drive then remove the hard drive insert the CDRW drive which will now become your D drive. Now you can back them up to CD. If you don't have the optional CDRW drive then my point is moot. Hope this helps.

Hi Hickory,

On my A31p IBM Laptop, I installed the optional UltraBay 2000 adapter with the 80 GB Hard Drive in it so it is now the permenant D Drive. My CDR W drive is now my E Drive so I think I can burn CD's from both drives. Thank You for your coments. Havew a great day.
