Some shots of a mosquito- Think it's Culiseta annulata. How does it stick that proboscis through skin? it doesn't look very sharp :)

Love the last one... don't love the fact that you now have to post your pictures as thumbnails first. Your larger pics never bothered me (then again, I am on 1680x1050 widescreen). Excellent as always.

amazing eye detail; not crazy about these thumbnails either = more clicks, prefer to just scroll. Hard to believe many people here are on dial up these days - costs more if you are on forums etc a lot.

Amazing shots as usual although I can't say I like the subject. Incidently, since you've been snapping insects near water often this summer, have you been troubled with dun flies? They must have sharp proboscis' as they can even bite through my denim jeans. They lack the analgaesic of mozzies and really sting when they bite. If you manage to post any I shall request permission to pin up a few printouts and get my own back with a set of darts.

There was something in the back of my mind telling that there proboscis has several parts and they use it similar to an electric kitchen knife, vibrating its way in :D ...

Thanks Eccles,
Must admit I'm not sure what a dunfly is apart from a fly fishermens favourite (tried googling and just got lots of fishing flies :) ).

Do you mean they have a strimmer on the end ? :)- suspect you must be right- wondered if this was just the sheath and it's the inner part that does the penetration.

Thanks RM :)
I'm not mad about the pic bit either- takes me twice as long to set up the pictures. The size thing doesn't seem to be about bandwidth considerations it's more about format within the forum although I'm pretty certain the size I was posting at did not affect that. I suspect the mods do not appreciate that much of the enjoyment of macro pictures is in the detail rather than the composition as a whole.
I could post "medium size" size pics with a link to the larger version which might prevent the need to go the larger size ;)

Great shots and fantastic eye detail.
I can see why you like to post larger, I find eye detail gets lost at <=600 pix wide.
