On another forum (not photo related) I visit when someone asks what kind of digital camera to buy I reply: Canon. Always Canon.

Canon owns 7 out of 10 in the first category and 8 out of 10 in the second. Wow!

There is one minor problem with this sort of list. Some of these cameras have been available for much longer than others - I see that the Canon G5 is not in the top few but, if I were to buy now it would be the G5 that I would be buying, rather than a G2.

Yes, every statistics has its limitations. The list is not targeted to show the 'best' camera but the popularity of camera models in US (mainly). Of course, if you buy a G series model of Canon camera, you probably will buy G5 and you cannot find G1 in first-hand market. Similarly Canon 10D has #1 photos in pbase.com but the Canon 300D is catching up. Maybe one year later the most popular model will be 300D, but who knows?

However you can see the general trend that Canon is far more popular than other brand names.

Can you blame most people for liking Canon stuff? I sure can't. In all the reviews I've seen, the Canon line is anwhere from blows away Nikon's equivilent (Canon EOS 10D vs Nikon D100) to is way better in most aspects. I was even tried to be persuaded into getting a Nikon when I was waiting on the 10D. I said that would be daft, and asked why? I said that I already have Canon EOS lenses and switching camera makes midway wouldn't be advantageous. Understandably, to a camera dealer it is as I would have to get Nikon lenses. No thanks I said and stuck to Canon. I'm really glad I waited. Canon seems like they paved the way and now Nikon is eating Canon dust!

Cheers from England,
Canuck

Hi,

Do you know any online photo gallery services provider in UK so that I can get similar statistics to benchmark the information from pbase.com?

Thanks!

Tony,
Let me do some research and get back to you on that. Keep in mind that 1200-1500 pounds is a lot of money over here in the UK, even moreso than 1500 in the US. I can't speak for other countries, as far as an equivilent price other than www.xe.com for a currency converter, but that really doesn't give you the whole picture. I'll get back to you.

Cheers from England,
Canuck
