I find that when shooting fast moving objects in low light I need a decent flash, especially if you can't get close to your subject. I use the 420EX (frequently raved about on this site!).

When I have not been able to use either the 420EX or my internal flash (in situations where a flash will cause too much of a distraction), I set the camera to ISO400, shoot as RAW, and under expose by a stop in TV mode (haven't tried pushing this any further yet, probably time for some experimentation!) to get a faster shutter speed.

Due to the increased exposure latitude of RAW, I can then correct the exposure afterwards, and finally clean up the noise with a noise reduction application such as NeatImage (www.neatimage.com, been using it for a couple of weeks now, fantastic!).
