S230 Night shots!

Hello! This is my first time here, and I am finding this board very helpful and imformative.

I love taking photos and I am trying to get into taking night pictures.. for example, streets, buildings with passing cars...etc

I am really new to this and I am not sure what are the right settings to set the camera to. I see other people's night shots and they are always so crisp and the lights are crisp and clear. I want to get my photos looking like this for example:

I have a tripod and I have fooled around with the shutter speed and I really don't know what to do with it and how long to expose and how long to hold down the button half way.. and well I am lost... please help!

s230 is an auto digicam with a small amount of manual control. The only control for night shot is to set it to long exposure, use tripod, and hope for the best. You can adjust the long exposure for up to 15 sec.(I think, but cannot remember now). Afterwards, use any photo editing software to adjust brigtness. I have used this technique quite successfully.
