View Full Version : Downloading Folder and File Number

Some time ago I downloaded a card from my G2 and it transfered across to Photoshop with both its folder and file numbers intact
The problem is I don't seem to be able to discover exactly how I did it.
Normally, all I seem to get is the file numbers... but I would like both.
The problem is not exactly 'life-threatening' but more out of curiosity I would like to know how to do it again.

Any ideas?

Are you using a program like Zoombrowser to download your photos? If so skip that and just go into My Computer and double click on the drive that shows up as your compact flash card drive use the file explore option to access the card then copy the complete folder out of DCIM to your hard drive where ever you want it.

Tom,

Thanks for your prompt reply.... I have just tried what you suggest but I still seem to be unable to get the full file name into Photoshop.

The file on the flash card is, in this case, 131_3160

131 being the folder number and 3160 being the file number.

Once transfered, via My Computer to Photoshop the file is identified as only 3160.JPG

What I really want is the file to appear in the format 131_3160.JPG

The files (your pictures are actually named IMG_3160.JPG and the only way to get it named to 131_3160.JPG would be to rename it yourself. So, the full filename is getting 'sent' to PhotoShop.

The folder name is 131 and then the photos are named within that folder.

squeaky,

He's right about naming the files. You'll probably have to rename each file individually. I use Firehand Ember to view files and it will allow batch renaming but it would be difficult to get the names of the files to be in the format your wanting.

Altho, I agree it would be a nice option for reference purposes. There may be some programs out there that will allow the renaming of a batch of files all at once, maybe someone else here can chime in with some suggestions.

Good luck!

Why do you want to keep the number intact? It will be another 10,000 pics before that number comes up again.

I'm sure your sorting doesnt involve numbers and involves subjects or places.

Keep it simple.. the rest of the electronics and software is hard enough!!

The reason I want to do this is because I have done it one time by chance.... and want to know exactly how I can do it again.... Isn't that enough?

The time it occured did not involve any elaborate renumbering or the adding of prefixes.... I do occasionally use an Apacer Disc Steno.... but cannot remember if I actually used this device that particular time.

Squeaky,
Are you using Windows XP?

XP has a built in "Download Digital Photos" prompt that includes automatically naming files. On my PC it used to pop up about half the time I inserted a CF card. (I ended up disabling it intentionally)

But it may be that is what happend the one time,. and you were able to get it to use the naming system you prefer???
