Hi,

I want to buy a wide angle for my 10D that will give sharp pictures. I have the 28-135IS, and it's almost wide enough, but not sharp enough.

I've heard many mixed reviews on the 16-35, 17-40, etc. Please post pics, and give advice before I purchase :)

Thanks!

Rob

I've used both lenses on my 10D (rented the 16-35, bought the 17-40), and in my experience, they're about the same as far as sharpness is concerned. Unless you really need the larger aperture, I'd go with the 17-40.

I don't have any pictures from the 16-35 online right now, but I do have a recent one from my 17-40. It's at:

Incidentally, I had a weird problem one time with the 16-35. My aperture got stuck at "0" and every shot was horribly overexposed -- almost solid white. I took the lens off and put it back on, and the problem went away and it never happened again. I mentioned this in another forum earlier this year and someone said he had the same exact thing happen with a 16-35 on his D60.

Sigma has a 12-22mm lens on the way and I'm interested in seeing some results from that lens. I have a friend who has one on order... I think the price tag is about $650.

I just got the fixed canon 2.8 20mm lense. Its very nice, it was about $420. I forgot how much I missed wide angle after going digital. This fixed that.

Hi!
I can vouch for the 16-35mm F2.8L being stunning. I was shooting after sunset an was making it look like broad daylight. I am truely stunned how it does in sharpness and colour tone and the like. It also works well when shooting sweeping landscape/sunset pics as I often do. There is one of many true tests to see how good your camera/lens is. I like to see how it compares to what you see with your own eyes. I haven't had too much time to play with it in sunsets; however I have used it in quite a few other situations with awesome results! When I look at these pics, I can't believe I've taken them! It is really a shame that computer monitors can't handle the monster resolution that the 10D puts out! I shoot RAW then process it to TIFFs and then to JPEGs if needed so I can e-mail them. My vote is definitely with the Canon 16-35mm L lens. There is one down side, cost, $1370! I was originally like no way, but since seeing it, I am planning on getting a few more L glass lenses. Now, how to afford them...

Cheers from England,
Canuck

I use the EF17-35mm f/2.8L USM as my statndard lens to shoot weddings, landscapes, available light, etc. I've tried to replace it with 2 fixed focal length primes (24mm f/2.8 & 35mm f/2) and tested each on my 10D. My opinion, and that of the salesmen who allowed me to test these lens was to stick to what I had. We downoaded the images in the store and the difference was immediately obvious. The 17-35 won hands down in all departments, especially wide open.

Check out my website : centralcoastweddings.com.au and click on photographers then Mark White Photography. Most of these images were taken with the 17-35.

Check out the Tokina 17mm AT-X Pro. I bought one a few weeks ago and love it. It produces sharp pictures and it is built tuff.

I was torn between buying the Tokina and the Canon 17-40L. So far, I am glad I chose the Tokina.

There isn't much info about this lens on the web. Here are a couple links to some reviews.

Here are some sample pictures I took with this lens. I'm no pro so don't grade this lens by the quality of my photos. Click on the original size to see how sharp this lens is. It's great from corner to corner.
