OK, so I'm not the smartest guy in the world. I really shouldn't have been in this neighborhood, alone, at night with nothing but my G3 to keep me company. Well, it wasn't all THAT bad. There were plenty of people around, and NY is a lot safer these days, right?
This is the Manhattan Bridge from Brooklyn.
Canon G3, 2 secs., f4, ISO50. Mini-pod on dumpster.

Nice picture. I know the general area you were standing at, and yes, it would be a little rough at night. I am a little disappointed...your pictures always have some post-processing magic, but in this one, I can't seem to find any. Are you setting us up for another picture you'll post tomorrow with cool lights, helicopters, and sky-divers in the background?
Just kidding. The imposing bridge and the cityscape blend together very nicely in tone. What are you trying to convey in this picture?
Also, what minipod do you use? I've just bought an UltraPod II.
Thanks,
Pradeep

Hi Scott
Another great shot. Do you carry a dumpster with you wherever you go? :D

OK Scott, if dumpster is the key to taking good night shots, I will try looking one next time! :)

I highly recommend bringing your own dumpster. You just never know...

Pradeep, I use a "Mini-Mini Ball Pod", made by Giottos (its about 4 inches tall when folded, hence the name. It extends out to maybe 8 or 9 inches). The Ultrapod looks good, too. I'll have to check it out, though it might be a little large for my camera bag.

Hi Scott,
What kind of backpack do you have for carrying the dumpster? :D
Again, it is a gorgeous shot and superb composition!

Thanks, Richard. No backpack, just a long rope. Had a heck of a time getting it through the subway turnstiles!!

Hi Scott,
Nice content, contrast and composition.
For me, the more individual photographic elements in an image the better. It's kind of like well-seasoned food ... you may not know exactly what is there but you know it tastes great!
I also like the even, sepia-like quality pierced by the points of light.

Thanks, Paul. Next time I think I'll take a bodyguard - someone to pull that *&%*^% dumpster!!

Hi Phil - thank you!
I like your "food" analogy - it's a very good thought, and something we can all try for the next time we go out shooting.
Also, I probably would have liked the sky to be more of a dark blue - the kind you get just after sunset on a clear day. But I was only in town for a few hours and it was a cloudy day. However, the sepia tones make it seem more "gritty" and city-like, so I'm satisfied (for now...).
