Greetings! The following gallery was shot in September in Idaho when my 100-400 was down in Irvine getting repaired. All photos were shot with the 70-200L f2.8 IS USM lens with the 1.4TC. The gallery was created with BreezeBrowser and I performed NO post-processing on these photos at all. They were all shot LARGE-FINE JPEG. BB does some USM on its own and is set at its default setting.
Anyway, just thought you might want to browse the latest Jet Sprint boat shots. Most of the boats are from Australia and New Zealand where the sport started.
Light was ideal and the two shoot garnered over 3,000 shots. I have selected a mere 540-some for this gallery.
Enjoy!

P.S. You can see the actual website by clicking on the link in my SIG. Thanks!

That must have been quite an event to get that many boats to come that far just to blast around in the Idaho mud. How many entries did they have, and how many were from 'down under?'
Excellent pictures. I still only have the f/4 70-200, but the few times I've put the 1.4X extender on it, the pictures have been really great.
We don't have many boats around here, and certainly no boat races. All our water gets used on golf courses. Yawn.

They come over here (well there, I'm in WA state) to race three races over three weekends a year. It's part of their world series event. All of the boats were from OZ or NZ except 4 or 5 of our USSBA guys that were competing for grins. There was probably 20-25 boats total.
Also, this type of boat racing: Jet Sprinting, is currently only done in OZ, NZ and the Pacific NW in Washington and Idaho. There's rumors floating that someone is trying to start up a series in Illinois, of all places.
if you can ever get to see these types of races, they are just insane fun! And, my wife and I got to go for a ride in one during that weekend's events. Take about a rush! Geeze man, 5-7g's is pretty intense!!

Great pictures Jim! I always enjoy your work.
Those pictures of the overturned boat are scary. It's amazing the crews can get to the boats and rescue the crew so quickly. Are serious accidents common in this sport? I recall another amazing rescue sequence you shot a few months ago.

Serious accidents? Not too often, but they do happen. Spectacular accidents? They happen quite a bit. These guys are on a gnat's hair's edge, especially in the final eliminations. It's pretty intense stuff. And yes, I did post that other one too. Actually there are a couple that I haven't included in the galleries.
I look at this one here and I now wish I had edited/copped the shot so you could see it better. Oh well...I don't go there for the accidents anyway.
Vegas Poboy: Thanks! There's more at my website. ;-)

Coincidentally, I am considering purchasing this lens combination and was wondering if the IS feature is worth the extra money. Does it allow you to use the lens without a tripod? If not, what is the point of IS with a lens that size? If so, it seems to be worth the extra bucks.

hhorwitz: The IS will grab you a couple more stops. Also IS II steadies the focus for panning so yes, I think it's worth it. I don't use it all that often, but it sure is noce to have it. Yup, it's a pricey add-on, but if you can afford it, go for it. You won't regret it. Many call this lens Canon's finest zoom lens (period).
I know I'm happy with it.
Oh and I never shoot with tripod or monopod.

Something broke in the focusing mechanism. It wouldn't lock. Then I pulled back on the zoom from 400-100 and it popped and then focused fine. Then it kept doing that though an entire session. Once I got home it was dead. Took three trips to Canon to get it fixed. Now it's like new again and I still love the lens, but now even more happy that I got the 3-year MACK warranty and (also) purchased it with my American Express which actually extends the Canon factory warranty to two years.
