Hi, my first post though I've been lurking for a few weeks. Quick intro then the question. I'm about 15 years into photography (still very much an amateur), my first setup was an EOS 620, then few years later I upgraded to the 10's. 2 years ago I sold it and got an Olympus digital (3030z). I know I know... but hey I just had a kid and took tons of pics with it that came out great... but I 'needed' to have an SLR again, I knew I would have an SLR again. P&S just wouldn't do... The 300D came out and even though 1000 bucks is a big nut to crack I got it 2 weeks ago. Man does it feel good to use that sucker.
Ok enough of the blah blah....
Can anyone give me a some insight to this lens... I've found it for 649 + shipping at Etronics and 579 + shipping on EBay(new). Im looking for an experienced photographer to give this lens there blessing :) or perhaps recommend something better in the 70-300ish range.
Anyway, thanks for looking

Please do a search in the forum and you will find this subject is brought up nearly weekly.
The Sigma 70-200 EX is considered by many to be the next best thing to a Canon L lens.
The quality of optics and construction are truly at a perfessional level.
I recently bought the 70-200 and have been floored by how much sharper it is than my Sigma 24-70 EX lens. It has made my camera come alive.
Do a search and you will find a few hundred posts about this subject.

Hi all I am new as of 30 seconds ago on this forum.
I have just ordered the 10 d and lots of goodies. I had ordered the sigma 70-200 then I read lots of people having compatability problems. I tried the sigma lens in the camera store and the auto focus was much faster than lens I was using. The sigma did hunt for a fraction of second before locking on target. The canon was on target every time.
I decide to spend the money on the canon for now and for future compatibality.
Optically the sigma lens comes close to the canon and is a good deal for the money.
good luck

I have this lens and I love this lens. I have it because I got a great deal on it and I would not part with. Canon L series is the ultimate and you would never go wrong. But if you are a little short on funds then you will not go wrong buying this lens. I use it on my D30 and the results I get at high school football games after dark and under lights is spectacular. Good luck!

A short tale...
I compared the following lenses in real situations:
Sigma 15-30 vs Canon 16-35L - bought the Canon.
Sigma 24-70 vs Canon 24-70L - bought the Canon.
Sigma 70-200 vs Canon 70-200L - bought the Sigma.
Next purchase is likely to be the Sigma 120-300.

This was my second lens. I thought it was great, but I exchanged it for a Canon 70-200 f/4L. I mainly did it for the weight. After getting the Canon lens and after reading a lot of posts in favor of the L series lenses I found one thing to be true. The Sigma 70-200 is easily as sharp, but somehow the color is better with the Canon Lens. If f/2.8 is a necessity, than do hesitate to get the Sigma. If, like me, you shot f/8 - f/11 95% of time. Get the Canon L, it is a lot smaller and lighter.
