View Full Version : 20D: B/W jpg settings from RAW

I have had a 20D for a long time now and occasionally I like to futz around with B/W mode jpgs.

Recently, I've decided to switch to RAW; I've been shooting JPG for most of the time I've had the camera. I really like the results I'm getting from ACR, but I want to preserve the ability to use the B/W presets (ie, the B/W filters, sepia etc toning effects) during the RAW conversion.

I have DPP and BB too, but I think ACR is quite superior to both, faster, and easier to consolidate into one workflow. Therefore, I'd like to get this to work.

Thanks for your advice!

Wait... what are you asking?

I don't think you can. You should convert color to b&w during post anyhow. The results are much better.

Not sure about the 20D, but DPP will allow you to apply the different filters and tone effects after changing the picture style to monochrome with the 30D. I imagine it would work with the 20D also. Doubt if any third party converters support this.

DPP does it, and so can BreezeBrowser, but it doesn't appear that ACR can.

Can anyone point me to a way to mimic the filters (ie, red, yellow, orange, green) or to apply a sepia tone to my B/Ws?

In DPP, when you select the monochrome style, the color and saturation sliders change to "filter effect" and "toning effect". Choose your filter with the first and sepia (or other tone) with the second.

The JPG coming out of the 20D in B&W mode is actually really good, it'd take some work to do that in PS.

In CS2 ACR to make a B&W I set saturation to -100 then play with the sliders in the calibration tab. Then I vignette a little. Once i'm happy I save it as a preset, that way you can right click in bridge and apply the same settings again very quickly.

Inside Photoshop I use the channel mixer.

True, which is why I was hoping for a "quickie" conversion in ACR since Canon offers one in DPP. Alas, I guess I will use DPP for B/W conversions and ACR for the rest. I was just wishing out loud for a one-stop shop. :)
