Hmm...I may be towards the bottom, but between 1600 and 1700. :( It has seen action in the last of Concorde, astrophotography, roaming Wales/England, portrait work for friends and much more.

I have taken more than 1200 photos with my digital Rebel. I only got it five weeks ago. While that may not be a lot it only takes one wedding to chalk up another 700 photos. I have two weddings coming up...Dean

I appear to have shot just over 2,000 pictures since early July. The only reason I can't be more precise is that a have a hole in the numbering sequence that might be attributable to using the CF card in my G2.

Hey, guys, rather than chalking up as many shots as you can number, why not compare the number that have been saved?
Anybody can shoot a hundred bad ones. Only a few can shoot ones that get published, sold, or otherwise constructively used.

I save them all. I just don't show them to anyone. Disk space is cheap.

Maybe the question should be, "How many pictures have you taken to date which you would be proud to show off to people or post on a web page?" :)

Maybe two. I'm still learning.

Bob and PacAce:
Forgive my earlier somewhat flippant answer. The truth is, I save most of my pictures, not because I'm especially proud of them, but because I consider them resources for possible future reference.
Bear in mind that the vast majority of my pictures are railroad subjects and are typically of interest only to other train buffs. I take them more with a thought towards informational content and not towards artistry. Occasionally, I will point the lens in the direction of something that isn't train-related, and every once in a while, one of those turns out well enough to print. Goodness knows, here in the desert there are lots of things to shoot, and as time goes by and I've generally grown bored with repetitive railroad subjects, I will turn my attention to them.
So, I guess I'm saying I have a reason for saving pictures that others of you would probably not deem worthy.
Does that make any sense?

Yup Tom, that does make sense. I keep my personal work seperated in two ways. The loose edit goes on my personal site, which is shared with family and friends, and contains the majority of the photos I shot for that given day / trip / event. These would also include photos I might otherwise normally delete. I then do a much tighter edit, taking only the best shots I have and keeping them in a seperate folder, which goes onto my photo gallery site. Out of the tens of thousands of photos I have shot (from my e-10 to d60 to 10d, and even some film!), I think I have only around 100 photos in my best of gallery. Funny thing is, kind of like how you keep photos that you may otherwise not dislpay, I have some shots that I thought were only so-so but that family and friends have thought were really nice. If I hadn't posted these shots on my personal / family website, I probably would have just deleted them and lost a photo that others thought was good.
And then work is another story...
I have lost count but since the most recent numbers out of it are in the 0400 range, I am definitely over 10,000, but don't think I have gone over 20,000 yet (though it is possible...why can't they include a real shot counter in the camera?)
I really can't say for sure, nor say how many shots I have kept, since I use it for both fun (family, grab shots, etc), personal work, and commercial work. I do often try to shoot less quantity and more for quality, which saves editing time in the backend. But at the same time, when doing a big job I do not hesitate to shoot and shoot and shoot, since all that matters is the client is happy with the selection of photos I deliver. And since all of my shots get renumbered and archived along with 6 other photographers, there is really no way for me to go back and count them all.
Two weeks ago, in 3 days alone I shot over 1000 images for a client, and (for Bob ;) ) I delivered a little over 700 of those. And I was shooting conservatively. Granted, that was a really, really big job. I probably average 75-150 shots for a normal commercial job, and the number delivered often depends on what the client pays for (could be 10, could be all of them). For a PR or sports shoot, the total shots could go up to 300-400.

Tom,
Yes, it does make sense! I also save all my images, whether they're worth keeping or not, partly due to laziness (don't want to hassle myself with image housekeeping) but also because, like you, I may be able to use some of these images, in part or whole, in the futre. I do a lot of video editing and there are times when I need to use still images of one sort or another in my video production, and my "ready-made stock image library" could come in handy for such purposes! :)

Interesting to hear about your experiences Matt. I've only just got the 10D, but I've hired digital for some jobs in the past and I've always felt it was a mixed blessing: Great not having to shoot a bunch of polaroids, then repeat the whole thing on film. But it seems too easy to stop shooting when you think you've got it. With film you had X rolls per shot, and you used it all, often getting the final choice on the last couple of rolls.
Still haven't found a good way to edit digital - another reason not to keep shooting. Give me a lightbox and lupe any day...

Now is that not the understatement of the month? I if I have said this once, I musta said it several hundred times that you can't skimp on glass and/or the difference between cheap glass and Canon L glass/Sigma EX series will definitely show in your pics!
Don't overlook the Sigma EX series, the 120-300 F2.8 is awesome if you don't mind the boat anchor (5.75 lbs), and I have heard a number of good things about other ones too! CDS has the Sigma 50-500 EX and apparently loves it. You might ask him.

Well, I got my 10D in May and am at 16,689 shots right now. I passed up the D60 that I got in October 02 some time ago.
I keep most of my shots, but if they are totally unusable, I trash them. With this setup, it's not all that often that I get unusable shots so I have saved probably 98% of my shots. And it's about time to back up 2003's sports shots onto DVD.
Thanks for the reminder...

I've taken 265 shots. The camera was such crap that I put it in my drawer, and it will probably never come out again..
Ok, the real reason is that I've had it less than a week, and I've had very little spare time since I got it :/ But indeed, I LOVE this camera =)

Maple, the file name / number corresponds to the number of shots taken, given that your camera is set to continous numbering. So if your file name is img_2345, you have taken 2345 shots.
Granted, this can be thrown off if the camera gets reset, if continous number isn't on, and I have heard that if you put a CF card from one camera into another camera (of the same model), that it may read one of those ctg or cto or nfo or whatever that file is that is in the DCIM folder, and cause the image numbering to change. I haven't ever tested that out, only heard about it a while back.

8532 pics since 2003 07 28. I find that the metering needs frequent tweaking and so usually take a couple shots of the same subject.

Geez, CDS/RFM, almost a shot every 10 minutes for the last 6 months, taken in account that you sleep 8 hours a day. Kudos!
I stuck at a merely 6000 in over a year with the D60.

I do sports and shoot tons of shots at each event. Recently I have been doing girls soccer. A game last an hour and I average 400 shots per game. Now if I was just shooting birds and landscapes and such, I'd probably be under 3,000 shots. Maybe even less.

I am at 8500+ for 10D since they came out in US (I got mine on day 1 of availability) and about 12000+ for D60 since Jun 2002 (I still use it occasionally). So overall I think I am averaging about 2000 shots per month, which for part-time / hobby is a lot. Going a little slow right now as I am tied to my photoshop computer and printer in the evenings, catching up to things I have promised to others.
One of the caveats missing in some of the answers is
family snapshot, hobby, part-time, or full-time photographer.
Just my input

lol,.. I guess I shoot birds like RFM shoots sports! rofl.
Really,. as I was learning to use all the 10D's features as well as just learning photography. Essentially any sunny day that I would take the camera out I took approx 300 shots.
that has now been dramatically reduced as I grow more accustomd to the camera.
But really the LCD screen tells me very little,. so I'd rather soot 15 ppics of the same subject and get one perfect,. than shoot one or two pics and hope for a keeper when I get home to the PC.

In comparison I had my Pro90 for 22 months and took about 2000 shots -- 91 per month, 3 per day. Of course, it suffered from shutter lag. ; )

Hi!
I know this all too well, and being digital it kinda doesn't matter. That's what PS is for to tweek the image, right?
I can hear a few people say that nothing beats taking it correct in the first place. Well, what are the chances? Not very high at all so that's where the cool PS tweeks come into play. So how many do we shoot perfectly, absolutely no tweeks needed the first time. I can say a handful with fingers to spare. Anyway, I recon the moon is calling my name and not often is it that we get a clear night over here in England, althought it is much better this year than in the past 2 winters.

I've had my 10D since mid May; I have 10,236 raw images on my hard disks. Hundreds (thousands ?) deleted...
I am amazed at how much my photography has improved over this time - learning the camera, and learning how to work with light.
A few dozen (optimistically) are real keepers; hundreds have been shown or shared.
A fun hobby ... amazing to think it corresponds to 1 picture every twenty minutes, round the clock!

I got my 10D back in June (5 June 2003 acccording to the warranty card)
I have taken 6700 pics so far.
Over here June is midwinter, so I have been hampered by bad weather. I also have to work on many fine days :(
I think that if the sun is shining you shouldn't have to work!
Oh well, It's summer next month, I'll see if I can get my pic count up to 10K before Autumn.

Unwrapped my 10D from the box on July 22 and to date I'm just over 4,700 shots. I swear, it did nothing but rain and we had a lot of fog and little or no sun for the 1st 2 weeks I had the camera.
As to what I save and delete ... I learned the hard way just to burn everything to CD as soon as I can. The cheap cost of CD's is easier than spending all that time picking over all the shots and even doing that I've deleted a few I didn't intend to. I also put off putting a few hundred shots on CD so I could pick them over and had a crash a few years back ... lost them all and they were probably the most important photos I've ever taken (my brother in laws run for his first political office including family, friends and many VIP's). GONE!
Out of those 4700 I'd say I have maybe 10 I will print and hang for others to see.

Come on, fellow amateurs - lets show these pros and semi-pros the way.
Quantity is not always a matter of numbers! I have had 10d since August and am well into 3 figures and, therefore, my second folder.... but:
Have taken 3 shots where partner went aargh when previewing.
Have decided that my monitor is sadly in need of replacement.
Have decided that 'soft' is the new sharp.

Similar to me. Over 8,000 shots on each of my two 10D (90% motorsport) with about 85% absolute keepers. My 1D hasn't had a chance to run up much of a total yet. That means filing around 13,000 images. I only archive the RAW masters. I have some 120gb firewire drives that I use for this purpose (bought 10 of them for really good price). Its a lot of data, thank goodness storage is cheap these days.
I always end up with a driver, team or publication asking me if I have a shot from a particular race sometimes months after the event so the archive is essential.

My 10D has 3 shots on it. I picked up my second one a couple hours ago and took 3 pictures immediately after opening the box. I also used a brand new 512 mb CF card. The counter shows 99 shots, so apparently they come out of the factory with a few on them.
Anyway, it's about 3,000 on the old one, and 3 on the new one.

As I'm in the UK its whatever we run here - Touring Cars, Formula Ford (I drive one anyway), F3, Porche Cup, Club Racing, TGP, Classic, F Renault, etc. A very long list, enough to keep me busy most weekends.
I do some motorsport PJ for a couple of mags and quite a lot of work for teams and drivers. The downside is I don't have time to just sit back and enjoy watching. I don't work the GP and that's about the only time you'll see me without a camera at a race track.
I'm trying my hand at a bit of rally work over the winter at the request of one of the UK's top drivers. I'm not totally looking forward to standing knee deep in snow in a dark and freezing forest.
