I wanted to get some ideas of what different people use for metering settings and in what situations. What works best for you? Your experiences?

Well different circumstances call for differetn metering.

I tend to use partial a lot as it is the closest thing to spot that the 10D has and I shoot a lot of birds. I want the subject to come out.

But I switch back and forth between
"Partial" and "Evaluative" when I am shooting an entire scene.

I think I have used Center weighted twice.

Before I got my 100-400 zoom, I used to use partial metering a lot because my bird subjects filled only a small portion of the screen and I wanted to make sure I exposed for the small bird and not the overwhelming background.

But now that I can get "closer" to my avian subjects with the 100-400 zoom I've switched to evaluative metering almost exclusively.

I may use partial metering every now and then when it's called for but I hardly, if ever, use center weighted metering.

Ditto, for the way CDS does it. I like to focus in on my subject for most of my shooting. But on landscapes and other large groupings, I use evaluated.

Ditto to what CyberDyneSystems said...

Evaluative for grand scenics, partial if focusing in a specific subject. I also use partial a lot to meter different parts of a scene to get an overall feel for light differences (the amount of stops) across the image.

It helps me to determine whether I need to use a neutral density filter for example, or determine whether or not I can even adequately capture the image in question without losing too much in shadow or blowing out the highlights.

So far I stick with Partial, but if I want to turn the 10D into a P&S, I use Evaluative.
