View Full Version : Firmware 2.0.0 messed up my 10D's image number register!

Hello fellow 10D owners,

I updated to firmware 2.0.0 from Canon's web site for my 3-week old 10D last week. I did not notice any improvement whatsoever since the update (Although I have been using IBM microdrive I never had the lagging problem which the new firmware claims to fix). However, it did cause a new problem: the image number jumped from 1900 to 9300 - that was over 7000 shots that I have never taken!!! Anyboy observed similar problems?

What I really had hoped from the update was that it might fix the annoying 2- second or so fuzziness of each picture right after you press the review button. My G-2 does not do this at all. It's a shame for 10D to have such a glitch. Does your 10D have this bug too? Or it's just mine?

Yes,. it is not a glitch. The images are large and take time to load into the LCD all the way,. the "gradual fade in" is there for a reason,. so you don't have to wait the full amount of time for an image to load before you decide to "wheel" past it or to delete it or to hit the "info" button.

It's not really a bug. It's the image being sharpened. And how do you know your G2 isn't doing the same thing but behind the scenes. With the 10D, when you advance to another image, the next image is displayed right away although there is the lag you were referring to before the image becomes sharp. On the G3 (I'm assuming your G2 works the same way), the next image doesn't appear until a few seconds later from the time you hit the "next" switch. So what do you suppose the G3 is doing between the time the image advance button is pressed and the image finally appears? Sharpening behind the scenes maybe?

Just curious... have you tried changing the menu setting for File Numbering Method to Auto Reset, taking a few shots, then setting it back to Continuous?

Cheers,

Jussi: Just put back one of your recently used cards (not the one you used to install the firmware) and your numbering sequence will return.

Did you format the card you installed the firmware on in your computer or the camera?

Thank you all for your answers and suggestions!

I never changed the numbering format to "Auto Reset" then changed back to "Continous".

I have two Microdrive cards: 340 MB and 1 GB. I used the 340 MB to install the new firmware (formated before downloading). But now I got 9000s from both cards.

I guess I may have figured out what went wrong and I need you guys help me to fix it:

On the same day that I updated the firmware, I happened to have used my G-2 as a card reader to download pictures to my computer from my two microdrive cards so that I could keep shooting. My G-2 has taken just about 9000 pictures so far. So the two cards most likely picked up the numbering sequence from G-2 ( I just double checked the numbers and they add up). The thing is I thought if I down load pictures from 10D the number would come back. But it did NOT. Seems somehow the numbering register in the 10D was overwritten by that in the G-2. The problem actually may have nothing to do with the new firmware. Just a coincident timing.

Is there a way to fix the problem, anyone?

Thanks,

Jussi

I don't think you can "fix" the problem, but you can set the counter back to 0000.

I had this problem happen between D60 and 10D, good thing, I had just taken my 10D over 10000 images so it was in the low number's when it happened to me.

I have learned that to prevent it from happening I need to delete all of the folders after transfering the files over. I think it is the folder itself which changes the number.

Which ever camera has the higher number will win every time if you don't delete the folders after copying.

Kind of annoying if you ask me, but I am used to it by now and only causes problems if I use both cameras between downloads to my computer.

My D60 counter is more messed up at this point, since I almost always format the cards in the 10D, so it copies the file numbering over to the D60 when I use it.

Just my experience,

It has been reset to 300 or so, hummm.
I lost my total.

Once the numbering sequence gets hosed, the only way to 'get it back' would be to use another card that had an old folder on it.

I had this (also) happen between by D60 and 10D when I first got the 10D. I had swapped cards between the D60 and 10D and the 10D took on the D60's numbering sequence. Once I saw that I reset the numbering on the 10D to 000 and then put back in the latest 10D card I had and all was well.

Other than that, there's nothing you can do. You cannot select a particular number in which to set the sequence.

Now I just usually do not swap cards, but if I do, I format them on the computer first and then they will start 'clean' and stay in sequence with whatever camera I am using.
