AVAILABLE TRANSLATION DIRECTORY FOR EE 1.5

I wish open this Topic in order to create a place where all of us could find the language files translated in different language, to get a real multilingual installation of Exhibit Engine by Pekka Saarinen.

When you install for the first time your Exhibit Engine 1.5b you find only two default languages inside:
The english one (primary language);
The finnish one (the language of the author...).

Now you can donwload also other languages:

The italian one - thanks to Boolbo;
The german one - thanks to Tomka;
The finnish one - thanks to Pekka;
The spanish one - thanks to Manutremo
The swedish one - thanks to Kad01
The french one - thanks to Denis
The Dutch one - thanks to Martin van Rekum
The Brasilian/Portuguese one - thanks to Pedro Luz Cunha
...

Go to this address for downloading them:
http://www.photofile.nl/cgi-bin/efileman/efileman.cgi

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Now we are searching for people who are able to translate the original english files into other languages: Dutch, greek, russian, chinese, japanese, arabic, danish, czech, hebrew, croatian, bosnian, estonian, hungarian, korean, latvian, norwegian, romanian, slovenian, turkish, vietnamese, indonesian, polish etc...

If you like to help us as we do for you, please post your translation by indicating the URL where all of us could download your translated files....share your work with the community of EE users!!!

HOW TO INSTALL A NEW LANGUAGE
...........................
Unzip the *.zip archive and upload the folder with the name of the language (e.g. "ita" or "ger" for italian and german lang) via FTP in the folder "laguages" you find in your EE gallery main directory (usually called "gallery").

Then go to your admin section, click on the button "languages" under the "SETTINGS" menu and add the language you recently upload to the EE database and set it as "public" (for the "lazy" feature read the Pekka's post under this one)).
Finally click on the "update all languages" button.
That's all folks ;-)

Nice!

Word about "Lazy language". There are definitely situations when you want to set it on.

There are two levels of multiliguality in EE for EACH language:

1. when language X is PUBLIC and LAZY is OFF
- public interface: translation files from folder X
- database: language data from language X (meaning you will HAVE to enter data in language X).
2. when language is PUBLIC and LAZY is ON
-public interface: translation files from folder X
- database: language data from language PRIMARY (so you will have to enter data in primary language, not X).

So, for example I would like to install german and italian to my site, but edit only english language database data: I set

ENGLISH: primary ON, public ON, LAZY off
ENGLISH: primary OFF, public ON, LAZY ON
ENGLISH: primary OFF, public ON, LAZY ON

PRIMARY is the language user will be offered when they enter the gallery (or editor). There should be only one PRIMARY ticked.

EE language system will always use English language as "mother tongue", in cases e.g. when there is no PRIMARY language at all and all languages are set to LAZY.

I downloaded and installed them, very nice work.

One thing: in german language you should enter locale

setlocale (LC_TIME , "german");

in global.php

I noticed that in the german files all characters that use an umlaut (eg. ü, ö, etc.) are replaced with weird symbols such as % or ^ characters. I'm using a Mac and viewing the php files in textedit. Is this a cross platform problem?

TomKa

This is a MAC problem. On a thread in the forum of the gallery 4images we talked about this, here is a translation table Macintosh character set -> ISO mapping.
Do you want to edit the php files on the Mac?

boolbo

I think will be interesting to have different version of languages for Mac and PC isn't it?
I mean only for the language that could have problem when viewed in Mac.....

I don't think the language has any problems with umlauts when viewed on web browser on Mac (the html code suggests a proper character set for browsers). Only when you open the language files and edit them on Mac.

if an exhibit is created in the gallery and then languuages are added later, is this a problem or will EE automatically handle this as far as showing the info about the exhibit and photos in the language?

or should the languages be installed first and then the textual info entered??

following pekka's method of setting english as the primary with lazy off and all the others as not primary and lazy on, is this the best method to present the exhibits in the gallery in other languages?

FWIW: i'd like to be able to offer to do some translations but i can only speak one language other than computerese and several programming languages... sometimes i do dislike being 'murrican :wink:

When you add a new language in language editor the current database data is copied to the new language - languages are "parallel" in database. All changes to photos and exhibitions are constantly mirrored between languages, fields marked "multilingual" are independent in content. "Lazy language" overrides that - when a language is lazy its textual database content is taken from primary language.

Primary language can be any language on the list, so if your site is mainly in esperanto set esperanto as primary and it will be default in public and in editor.

ahhh... i don't know what i was thinking... thanks for the explanation... possibly i shouldn't worry about additional languages in my setup, then... i do have visitors from all over the world to my site for many different things... i have many pics of many things (no, not adult stuff 8) ) and i figured that using a gallery app would be easier than manually creating and maintaining raw html pages... so here i am :lol:

I can of course offer space but for security reasons I can not give ftp access, so if you have some web interface to the repository then I'm happy to install the whole thing for you.

And thanks! :)

Hi,

I use a Mac like you but that is not the problem - the problem is Character Entities..!
I have only look in the the swedish, an that is not okay :-)

Read this

Escape Sequences (a.k.a. Character Entities)

Character entities have two functions:
escaping special characters
displaying other characters not available in the plain ASCII character set (primarily characters with diacritical marks)
Three ASCII characters--the left angle bracket (<), the right angle bracket (>), and the ampersand (&)--have special meanings in HTML and therefore cannot be used "as is" in text. (The angle brackets are used to indicate the beginning and end of HTML tags, and the ampersand is used to indicate the beginning of an escape sequence.) Double quote marks may be used as-is but a character entity may also be used (").

To use one of the three characters in an HTML document, you must enter its escape sequence instead:
<
the escape sequence for <
>
the escape sequence for >
&
the escape sequence for &

Additional escape sequences support accented characters, such as:
ö
a lowercase o with an umlaut: ö
ñ
a lowercase n with a tilde: ñ
È
an uppercase E with a grave accent: È

I don't know if Boolbo is still arround, but he is not updating his file library anymore.
After a message from him asking me to put the language files on my site and sent him the links, I did that. But from that moment on I never got a reply again and the links on his site were never updated.

Anyway, I have all available language files on my site. Just follow this link:

http://www.photofile.nl/pafiledb/pafiledb.php

And I will be happy to add the 'Brazilian Portuguese' file, just don't ask me to check it :D
