Got my pocket wizards a few days ago and finally got to shoot some action. What do you think? http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b260/mtbphoto/brian2.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b260/mtbphoto/brad1.jpg

You need to setup a second one to the inside and behind the rider to give him some rim lighting and keep him from dissappearing into the night.

I think you need more light directed into the rider, side shadows give a nice 3d effect but you still need plent of light on the rider that will reflect back to the camera. The rim lighting idea is great as well.
My other point of concern is that the berm is lit in such a way that you cant appreciate what is going on in the picture so well. What about a longer shutter with flash? if its dark enough the rider will not show up until he is lit by flash and he should be pretty well defined by the flash, you could experiment with differnet curtain syncs but rear will require better timing!
I would die to try out your set-up though, I have the 580 but cant afford pw's or another flash so i use an off shoe cord with mini din connectors and a cat 5e cable! not so easy to set up or untangle in the woods!

niro750: If you can't afford PWs, try some of the cheapy ebay slaves. I was sceptical, but if you're just going to try shooting some stuff with no other photogs using the same flash triggers, then they work fine. I've even used them at some of the bigger comps in the uk... i figured they were so cheap, that none of the other photogs would have them :)
merrrrjig: i've just ordered some PWs too, got some spare cash so thought i'd try them out! Nice shots, I hope to get some like that... though i prefer to shoot bmx now, rather than mtb :)
