Hello,

I have been asked to shoot some post asian wedding pics for a friends friend. I have already covered the pre party on saturday and did a shoot for the wedding on sun, but they had two official photographers so i asked to shoot to build my portfolio.

Anyways, I think i will most likely use my 50 f1.4 on my 20D to do most of the shots in a garden and by an embankment (depending on what they want), then i will be attending their party at some hall after to take more party pics.

I have 580 EX with a lumiquest pro max kit. But not sure what reflector to use for this, the outdoor shoot namely. It comes with a see thru, white, gold and silver reflector. I usually set the flash to -1 2/3, and i tend to shoot mainly with Av. I have a lot to learn with flash, because with indoor shooting, sometimes i get good exposure, and sometimes even with the flash, i get some dark coverage. I just dont understand it.

Not sure if this should go in the flash/portrait section or is it ok in this wedding section? any help appreciated...

oh and when i get my pics uploaded, i will post some up, loving the bright colours of asian clothing :)

Are you talking middle eastern or east asian? There's a quite a big difference between the two! ;)

There sure are quite a few types of Asian weddings...especially since there are quite a few Asian countries! ;)

But, seeing that the poster is from the UK, I'm guessing he means Indian wedding, or?

Just make sure to capture all the wonderful colors in their true beauty. Other than that I am sure you can handle it like regular wedding pictures. Maybe ask them or do a search if there are any traditional poses for asian-indian weddings.
When I shot my indian ebgagement party I included pieces of the wonderful indian decoration and all the inscents that they lid

im not sure if they will be wearing the full wedding garments. Not much has been said yet apart from the want post wedding shots.

Its my first time i have done anything relating to weddings, especially an indian one. I'm more portrait based so hopefully that might swing it a bit for me

Indian weddings tend to have various events form pre wedding, the actual wedding ceremony and going onto post wedding.

Between the Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs the post wedding can vary so i'll help where i can. For me i've been to a lot of muslim weddings and their post wedding will be formal, and usually a party from the grooms family.

Sikhs i think you will find will be more lively. They love their music, and I think you'll find it to be a very jolly event. Its worth finding out exactly what is planned for the day so you can be more prepared. Like has been mentioned, there will be a lot of vibrant colours which will look awesome. There was a post here about a month ago where someone stateside did a indian wedding, the results of which were awesome. I'll try to find that post again for you.

Another thing you may want to consider is asking if there will be any traditions that may be happening on the day. I know in some circles, the brides sisters and cousins will hide the grooms shoes and won't give it back until they've been given gifts or money. Sometimes this takes place on the wedding day, and other times on the post wedding ceremony. There is a lot of fun and laughter and it would be awesome to capture that moment.

One thing in your opening post you mentioned that they already have photographers covering the event, so i was wondering if they've already got the formals covered, it may be an idea to go for the candids?.., thats just a thought, as there will be a lot going on.

If you need any more advice, feel free to PM me.

Imran

thanks guys, i will have a look at your pics.

I have come back and it wasnt as good as i had thought... dont get me wrong, the party was amazing, good food, drink and company :D but my pics were a bit pants i thought. Let me russle up some edits, got about 15 gigs to go through tonight and i will post them up for you to have a look.

I had posted for some advice in the flash section as a lot of it was flash photography in the dance hall. Really crap lighting and i still dont have a clue how to use flash properly still.
