I got myself recently a 420EX flash to attach to my G3.
Yesterday I found a very very tired mosquito that I took and put it on a white sheet of paper.
Here is the best result I got out of 20 shots.
For those interested here is the exif data.
iso50,tulip mode with reversed 50mm slr, zoom 25mm,
f/8.0, 1/200sec, manual focus to infinity, white balance cloudy,External 420EX flash in high speed sync mode with omnibounce, set to minimum power by the G3.
It might be a little bit overexposed, and I dont know if putting it on a white paper helped or not. What I liked is to be able to see the details. It is the reason why I cropped so when the picture appears on your screen you can see the details.
Hope you'll like it.

Nice shot, Jose. I sure would hate to have that thing after me! It's big enough to carry my Gator off. :D:D:D:D

Thanks Rocky.
The real length of this insect was 5mm (not a big one),
your gator wont even see it :)
You should have plenty of them around your pond , and
bigger than mine :)

I would like to see the same shot against Black paper... and maybe stopped down a little more (f11, or f16). Do you still have that bad boy, or is he history?

Jim,
thanks for the comments.
On my G3 the best I can use is F8 ( nothing smaller).
I dont have this bad boy no more, but for shure , I'll try on something black next time I found another one.
I think there is still some room to improve the results.

there is plenty of detail to see the insect in your picture Jose. he looks very big

was he able to fly away ???
you say he has gone .. do you mean gone gone (dead)
or gone ....
like as in.. flew off..... refreshed :D :D

the flash alone would have killed him :D

should it happens to be daylight when taking a shot of one of these fellows, maybe you could take one without the flash .
sorry if I seem to be saying this too much.
not to insult your lovely new 420ex but sometimes insects come out better in natural light.
the flash would have reflected off the white paper also which wouldn't help.
(it was probably night time when you took it )

:)

you certainly got a lot of him to show us. thanks

best wishes

Hi Marie,
thaks for commenting my picture.
I was mainly happy to see the detail of the eyes, otherwise, the picture is overexposed.
He did not fly away, because when I found him, he was on the floor and not able to fly.
I usually kill them, but I left this one after taking my pictures.
I agree with you that the natural light is the best, but I had no natural light available and I was experimenting with my new flash.
Regards
Jose

Jose,

Wow, graet shot! I have seen a lot of big or small mosquitos, but this is the first time I see the details of a huge one :).
